El-Rufai Boys Convener Ibrahim Modibbo Sanusi Picked Up by Police at Aruwa Plaza, Kaduna — Location Still Unconfirmed

El-Rufai Live is receiving reports that @ModibboSanusi, lead convener of the El-Rufai Boys, was picked up tonight in Kaduna by operatives of the Police Rapid Response Team. According to accounts reaching us, it happened at about 8:30pm at Aruwa Plaza, Isa Kaita Road. He was taken into a bus described as carrying IRT officers. At the time of this report there is no official police statement, no stated charge, and no confirmed destination.

Ibrahim Modibo Sanusi is known across this movement as a youth organiser in the El-Rufai Camp and as a public voice for youth inclusion inside the ADC in Kaduna. He is not a fugitive. He has worked in the open. That is why the manner and timing of tonight’s pickup demand an immediate, lawful explanation from those who took him.

What we can say tonight is limited and must stay limited until it is verified. We know the name, the place, the approximate time, and the unit named by people on the ground.

We therefore calls on the Kaduna State Police Command to say, tonight, where Ibrahim Modibbo Sanusi is and under what authority he was taken. His lawyers and family must be granted access without delay. Supporters should remain calm, remain lawful, and share only what can be confirmed. Do not circulate rumours that put him at further risk.

This is a developing story. We will update as his location and the legal basis are established. No one is above the law. No one is beneath it.

MALLAM NASIR EL-RUFAI APPEARS BEFORE THE NJC OVER ALLEGATIONS OF JUDICIAL BIAS, DENIAL OF FAIR HEARING AND UNEQUAL BAIL TREATMENT

Mallam Nasir El-Rufai has appeared before the National Judicial Council (NJC) over his petition concerning the conduct of some judges handling cases involving him.

The petition raises allegations of judicial bias, denial of fair hearing and concerns over how proceedings and bail applications have been handled. The NJC has established procedures for complaints of judicial misconduct, making it the appropriate institution to examine such concerns.

The background is significant: a Federal High Court granted Mallam ₦200 million bail with stringent conditions, while the Kaduna State High Court subsequently refused bail in the separate ICPC matter. The Kaduna court also dismissed his third bail application in June.

These different rulings raise legitimate questions about the application of bail, fair hearing and judicial discretion that should be answered through the courts and the appropriate institutions, not through social media.

A petition to the NJC is not a verdict against any judge. It is a request for the body responsible for judicial discipline to examine the allegations and determine whether they have merit.

El-Rufai Live will not try the judges on this platform. We will follow the proceedings, report the facts and allow the NJC and the courts to address the issues raised.

Today, @elrufai has taken his grievance to the institution empowered to examine judicial conduct. The questions are now before the appropriate authority.

The reports of the deaths of 37 persons, including teenagers, in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State, are deeply disturbing and tragic. Whatever the circumstances surrounding their arrest, every person in the custody of the state is entitled to humane treatment and the protection of his or her life. Allegations of illegal mining must be investigated and dealt with according to the law, but enforcement of the law cannot come at the expense of the most fundamental right of all, the right to life.

I welcome the steps already taken to suspend the relevant NSCDC command and commence investigations. However, given the scale and seriousness of this tragedy, the investigation must be thorough, transparent and independent. We must establish how 37 people came to lose their lives while in government custody, including the circumstances of their arrest, the conditions in which they were detained, the medical attention available to them and the events leading to their deaths.

Anyone found to have acted negligently or unlawfully must be held accountable. Equally, the families of the deceased deserve timely answers, dignity and justice.

We must never become desensitised to the loss of human life. Security and law enforcement exist ultimately to protect citizens. The sanctity of human life therefore must remain at the centre of the exercise of state power.

My condolences go to the families and loved ones of all those who lost their lives. May Allah grant the deceased Al-Jannah Firdaus and give their families the strength to bear this painful loss.

This tragedy should not simply become another news cycle. It must compel us to strengthen our custodial systems, improve oversight and ensure that no Nigerian loses their life in government custody through negligence, abuse or a failure of duty.

Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, says his administration has not borrowed a kobo since he assumed office in May 2023 and that the state pays ₦6.7 billion monthly from its Federation Account allocation to service loans inherited from previous administrations.
But Kaduna State’s own budget performance reports and audited financial statements show that the government received billions of naira in loans in 2025 and the first half of 2026.

The state’s debt profile also shows an increase in domestic debt towards the end of 2025, while its external debt continued to rise during the period.

Mr Sani made the claim on Channels Television’s Politics Today on 27 August 2026.

“We pay ₦6.7bn every month from the loan we inherited. Since I became Governor, I have not borrowed one kobo,” he said.

“It is about being prudent. We are paying ₦6.7bn every month from our FAAC allocation, which will continue until 2048. That is what is in the Debt Management Office. It is not me. You can cross-check tomorrow morning.

The governor added, “When I talk, I talk on data and statistics. Whatever I say to you, you must go and verify.”

Based on that invitation, PREMIUM TIMES examined data from the Debt Management Office (DMO), Kaduna State’s budget performance reports, and Kaduna State audited financial statements and Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) disbursement records.

The records show that while Mr Sani inherited a substantial debt burden, his claim that his administration has not borrowed “one kobo” requires qualification and evidence from the government to contradict the documents.

𝐊𝐚𝐝𝐮𝐧𝐚’𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐝𝐞𝐛𝐭 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐢

Mr Sani became governor on 29 May 2023, succeeding Nasir El-Rufai.

As of 30 June 2023, about a month after Mr Sani assumed office, Kaduna’s domestic debt stood at ₦87.28 billion.

The figure fell marginally to ₦86.59 billion by 30 September 2023 and ₦85.52 billion by 31 December 2023.

It then declined substantially throughout 2024, standing at ₦29.38 billion in March, ₦28.60 billion in June, ₦26.61 billion in September and ₦25.76 billion by December.

The downward trend continued into 2025, with domestic debt falling to ₦25.01 billion by March and ₦24.09 billion by June. By September, it was ₦23.13 billion. But the position changed aggressively thereafter.

By 31 December 2025, Kaduna’s domestic debt had risen to ₦84.64 billion, an increase of ₦ 61.51 billion, or more than threefold, from the ₦23.13billion recorded three months earlier. It rose further to ₦87.87 billion by 31 March 2026.

The March 2026 debt stock is the last domestic data published by the DMO. This implies that, according to the DMO data, Kaduna domestic debt has increased by ₦590 million (0.68 per cent) over the ₦87.28 billion inherited from Mr El-Rufai’s administration.

The increase raises questions about what liabilities were added to the state’s domestic debt stock during that period.
