For the last year, IDFPR has been negotiating with industry and stakeholders to get to an agreed consumer protection, pawnbroker industry modernizing bill. This week, we did it. HB779 passed the Senate 52-0 and is waiting for the House to concur today before they go home.
By freeing millions of Americans from the crushing burden of student debt:
More homes would have been bought.
More businesses would have been started.
More couples would have had the confidence to start families.
The Republican elected officials who sued us blocked all of it.
The same Supreme Court that overturned Roe now refuses to follow the plain language of the law on student loan cancellation. This fight is not over. The President has more tools to cancel student debt — and he must use them.
Our colleges are stronger when they are racially diverse. And America is stronger because we are tapping into our full range of talent.
Today's Supreme Court decision is not the last word.
Affirmative action was never a complete answer in the drive towards a more just society. But for generations of students who had been systematically excluded from most of America’s key institutions—it gave us the chance to show we more than deserved a seat at the table.
