The peace that comes with this decision is real. I quietly successfully renounced my Nigerian citizenship in 2022 and life has been genuinely peaceful since.
A lot of Nigerians still see my name and instantly assume I’m Nigerian. They don’t realise that being of Yoruba descent doesn’t automatically make someone Nigerian.

I’ve played out every scenario in my head multiple times. As long as the country remains structured the way it is, it is not going to get meaningfully better not in our lifetime and probably not in the next generation either. Even if Peter Obi became president and governed well for eight years, we’d likely just get eight years of relative sanity before things slide back into the same dysfunction the moment he leaves.

If you must live in an African country, consider getting citizenship in places like Ghana, Botswana, Rwanda, Cape Verde, Mauritius, Seychelles, Senegal or Liberia, and properly integrate. Sometimes that means naturalising fully, even if it means changing your name ti the local tribal names or marrying a local.
