@kleavitt I think it speaks to another (troubling) fact, which research has pointed to. A significant number (probably majority) of Americans, if pressed, actually don’t care that much about democracy. They see it like an administrative detail that has no impact on their life.

The problem may not be too many Hitlers, but rather too many Eichmanns. For society to survive long-term, something beyond transactional day-to-day self interest is a necessity.
