@SuzanneEvans1 Interesting that they chose a picture of doctors here. The NHS pension scheme is billions in surplus this year and doctors pay a higher percentage of their earnings for a given pension.
@ArmstrongT97969@AlexJDeighton 20 years… puts the whole thing into perspective doesn’t it. And during that 20 years a doctor will have taken (at their own expense) numerous exams, rotate through numerous different hospitals, probably have to relocate on a few occasions and have to work nights and weekends.
@ArmstrongT97969@AlexJDeighton You’re confusing average with maximum. It takes 14 years as a consultant, which equates to at least 23 years after qualification and at least 28 years after starting medical school, to reach £139K.
@Xeon4f145d96s1 I did a degree in Pharmacy before I did medicine. I think you may have meant “medicines” not “medicine”. Pharmacy made me a safer prescriber but taught me virtually nothing about the art of assessment, investigation and diagnosis.
@ItsnotrightUK This, for me, is the biggest problem with non-doctors in primary care. People don’t understand the constant balance of risk required to avoid unnecessary investigation, treatment and referral. GPs are masters at it.
@AIDANTURNER4@tiredtwinktime@Microbedoc2 They haven’t. A certain few with vested interests have pushed this project through. Clueless politicians and people in power such as @JimBethell have then got involved and before you know it you have a big snowball. Most consultants expressed concerns but were called “elitist”.
@sg_strummer@Solid_Squid13@DrVoles@BuckCllr When the residents go on strike others, including consultants, step in to ensure that the medical cover is as it would be at weekends as a minimum.
@GCUFlexDemean @DrEilidhMaria Wrong. Doctors took the biggest hit of any profession to pay for the financial crash. Because we didn’t complain the Tories saw us as a soft target and continued our pay erosion. It should have been addressed years ago.
@DrEilidhMaria Absolutely. The other minor factor is language barrier. I can’t move to the southern hemisphere or North America for family reasons, but I’d go to France, Switzerland or Scandinavia if I could speak the language to the level needed.
@LeTour@Continental_fr British riders love a summit finish on Bastille day. 2022 was Pidcock on the Alpe, now Yates. What a measured ride. And I now get to enjoy the Bastille fireworks on lake Annecy after a lovely cycle on its amazing cycle network. Dream day. #tdf#TDF2025
@TriggeredRodney@DocShivSharma@LBC Absolutely not. We were travelling on the cheap like many gap year students do. Stayed in a local family’s spare room for a couple of weeks.
@TriggeredRodney@DocShivSharma@LBC Although not as ironic as the fact that the photo was taken before I qualified as a doctor, and I haven’t been near the tropics since 😆.
@TriggeredRodney@DocShivSharma@LBC The irony of someone quoting a figure from a newspaper article that uses the absolute maximum pay using circumstances that are now very rare 🙄.
