Wonder what's been going on with the Internet Government? This @SocietyLibrary program has been gaining immense experience creating federal-level policy and providing city-level consulting. We're taking the necessary steps towards becoming a representative engine. (1/2)
Thank you for having me on your podcast, @Liv_Boeree! It was such a pleasure. You are an incredible host.
Also - beyond making sense of people's values, we're building out structured representations of logical arguments and the evidence which backs them.
It's important to detect and incorporate predominant value preferences of a given civilization, but we also must gather the collective evidence and logical reasoning which a given civilization generates. Its about harnessing the best collective intelligence we have to manage ourselves well.
Really appreciate you giving me an opportunity to discuss this at length!
New interview out, this time with the brilliant Jamie Joyce! We discuss:
- why politicians are outdated technology
- fixing the evil of corporate lobbying
- why digitizing government may be the only way to save democracy
And much more. @JustJamieJoyce is as sharp as it gets, I recommend a watch 👇

Sometimes we want to see/hear different points of view on the questions we have - personal, professional, or on current affairs. 👥
The @SocietyLibrary team made this little tool to see multiple views at the press of a button. We call it "Perspectives." Let us know if you want us to keep it around! 🔽
Another sweet byproduct of our civilization-scale mapping work! 🗺️
Political matters are complex. We need to build tools to make it easier to search for truth at the civilization-scale.
Check out the @SocietyLibrary Papers interface, which nests a dynamic wiki page for every sentence in an interactive briefing document.
Following the news about the Search-Augmented Factuality Evaluator (SAFE) tool (which we have been building our own version of the past month), we know what comes next: "Context Checking." Read our article from 3 years ago on the subject: https://t.co/0vqtvR2X5R
It is not infrequent that I have to try and reframe people's misperceptions of why we use debate maps at the @SocietyLibrary. It's not because we want to make these maps 'a thing.' It's because 'debate-checking' is the logical end of 'fact-checking.'
If you are 'proving' one fact/premise/argument at a time, it's essentially cherry-picking. If you are searching for truth, it needs to be conducted in a manner that's maximizing the context of the inquiry space, so relevant arguments, counterarguments, evidence, etc. can be assessed holistically. Once you have done the work of debate mapping, it's very easy to see how one piece of knowledge can completely change the likely veracity and relevance of another piece of knowledge. If we're sincerely truth-seeking, we need to be as maximalist as possible.
Below is an example of just three layers of a debate map unpacked: it contains thousands of deduplicated, relevant points to consider on a nuclear policy issue. We made this by hand, and now we're automating with AI - which I think is going to be necessary if we want to be context maximalists.

➡️After the @Google@Gemini story about it resisting generating images of white people, it begs the question: What should the policies be regarding how AI generates images of people? There are many points of view and we don't shy from the controversy.

✍️This one has some references, too (really, just the beginning). This question was inspired from @OpenAI's Democratic Inputs to AI Governance Challenge.
We @SocietyLibrary have mapped thousands more arguments to add to the @beffjezos <> @NPCollapse debate using AI! Here's a walkthrough of our maps. Link to the interactive website below, feedback is welcome! 🔽
Want to vote on the strength of arguments in the debate maps we built about the @beffjezos <> @NPCollapse discussion from @MLStreetTalk? Thanks to @KungFuMonica's request, now you can! Click on "agreement" on each node to add your input on an adjustable Likert scale! Thanks again @KungFuMonica, and please keep the requests and feedback coming (especially if you think other voter mechanisms would be preferred)!
The Society Library was invited to participate in the Congressional Hackathon. Our work will be presented onstage at the U.S. capital today. We couldn't be there in person, but thankfully @thorningmichael from @BPC_Bipartisan is stepping up to present on our behalf. Thank you so, so much!
