In response to barriers refugees and host communities in Dadaab face in accessing economic opportunities, limiting their ability to build #sustainable livelihoods and achieve self-reliance, @RCKKenya in partnership with IKEA Foundation through the #WezeshaProject, recently conducted a targeted entrepreneurship and economic empowerment training for 29 participants drawn from both refugee and host communities.
This training aimed to equip small and micro-entrepreneurs with essential financial management skills designed to boost business productivity and foster financial independence.
Building on RCK’s successful initiatives in Mombasa, Kakuma, and Nairobi, this session emphasized the critical importance of separating personal and business finances, a gap that frequently undermines the growth of small enterprises. Through practical exercises such as tracking expenses on a daily to annual basis, participants gained hands-on experience in managing their finances, empowering them to save effectively and expand their businesses sustainably.
A core focus of the training was championing gender equality by addressing harmful cultural norms that restrict women’s economic participation. Encouraging women entrepreneurs to break free from these limitations not only promotes empowerment but also helps reduce their dependency on men, a factor often linked to increased risk of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).
This initiative aligns fully with the Refugees Act, 2021, which upholds refugees and asylum seekers’ right to socio-economic inclusion and self-reliance. By delivering targeted capacity-building sessions for #Refugees, and #hostcommunities, the project strengthens resilience and promotes shared economic growth for both displaced and local populations.
One participant shared, “I never realized how much money passes through my hands daily. Now I understand the importance of saving to grow my business.” This powerful testimonial underscores the tangible benefits of practical financial planning, which enables participants to build sustainable enterprises and improve their livelihoods.
RCK remains steadfast in its commitment to empower displaced and vulnerable communities by providing ongoing training, mentorship, and resources, helping break cycles of vulnerability and secure better futures for individuals and their families.
