A handful of scademics, one identified as professor from MIT, has published a paper saying that it would be theoretically possible - “not without some difficulty” - to produce a bomb with 1000 kg of 19.75% enriched HALEU.

Scott Kemp, one of the authors says that calculated result should force the world to limit enrichment of commercial fuel to 10-12%.

The arrogant group believes their academic calculations means we should forgo the HALEU advantages that have motivated thousands of scientists, engineers, policy makers and businessmen to invest a decade or more - and billions of dollars - in creating HALEU fuel capability.

Dozens of new designs with attractive features would be neutered.
IMO, a more productive response is to demonstrate effective protective measures & inventory controls that do an adequate job.

Accepting small probability events with plenty of layers remaining before employment of a weapon will allow immense benefits for humanity.

IOW, my personal response to the “scientists” and their finding is “So what?”

The NRC has completed its acceptance review of TerraPower’s construction permit application for the Natrium project in Kemmerer WY.

It’s sufficiently detailed to conduct an adequate safety and environmental review on a predictable schedule.

One more step along the path towards a completed project.
