🐴 Rice Shower: The Black Assassin

November 1992. Rice Shower wins his first major race, the Kikuka Sho, defeating heavy favorite Mihono Bourbon, who was chasing the Triple Crown. Instant villain status.

To prepare for his next target, two-time Tenno Sho Spring champion Mejiro McQueen, his team trained him with an intensity that drew mockery. Nobody believed he could win. The training made him so on-edge that his jockey said approaching him felt like he might "breathe fire" he was afraid of getting bitten.

April 23, 1993. In a three-way sprint to the line, Rice Shower held off McQueen and won by 2.5 lengths, crushing McQueen's shot at a historic third straight title. Reporters didn't even ask his jockey how it felt to win, only how it felt to ruin McQueen's dream.

That day, he became "The Black Assassin."

June 4, 1995. Running the Takarazuka Kinen , a race partly decided by fan vote, where he was the leading vote-getter, Rice Shower lost his footing on the third corner and fell, shattering his front leg. He was euthanized on the track. He was 6 years old.

After his death, the "villain" narrative softened. Fans say simply: "He loved Kyoto racecourse, and that's where he fell."
