The mains charger by itself has multiple safety measures protecting against power surges coming in from the outlet and certainly on the secondary side, where any instance of over voltage or over current would cause the charger to shut off.
@tim_hatch Whether USB PD or QC3.0, these are protocols by which a device and charger identify themselves to each other. The frying of the device in most cases is due to some fault/short condition in the device, in the connection to the device or within the cable.
