Out today from fellow scouser @PaulMcCartney!
Macca's 18th studio album, named after the road in Speke where he visited as a boy. The Boys Of Dungeon Lane captures the days of nostalgic memories growing up in Liverpool and represents Paul never forgetting his roots.
Out now on vinyl & CD!
The Musical Box turns 79! 🎉
With everything going on recently, we completely forgot it was the shops 79th birthday this week alongside what would have been Diane’s 89th and Paula’s birthday today.
With Diane’s recent passing we are even more motivated and determined than ever. We have so many plans and ideas for the future of The Musical Box to continue Diane’s legacy and make her proud, starting from next week.
The shop will be closed on Thursday 14th for Diane’s funeral. For anybody who would like to join us in celebrating Diane’s life and the shops 79th birthday, come down this Saturday for cake, cuppa and a chat!
April 15th my Nan Diane passed away during the busiest week of the year, three days before Record Store Day. We’ve been that busy with funeral arrangements and RSD, we haven’t even had time to process it all. There are no words to describe how grateful our family are for all the support we received for RSD and for the heartfelt messages and condolences for Diane’s passing.
We’ve been overwhelmed to see the impact Diane made on peoples lives. My Nan never really understood the importance of the legacy she had built with the shop, the history behind it and for introducing music to Liverpool. It was only towards the end when me and my Mum Paula got involved, we were able to shine a light on Diane’s accomplishments and she was able to have more of an understanding of what she had contributed to our city, which made her very happy.
For those who would like to join us in celebrating Diane’s life, her funeral will be held at St John The Divine’s Church in Greasby Thursday 14th May 1:00. There will be a donation box on the day to raise funds for the Strawberry Fields charity, a special place of significant meaning and importance for The Musical Box. Donations would be greatly appreciated and can also be made online with the link below.

Also a huge thank you to the Liverpool Echo for their beautiful tribute ♥️
Lovely to have Dave Grohl drop in the shop this morning to pick up the new Foo Fighters album ‘Your Favorite Toy’ out tomorrow while checking out Anfield ahead of the two massive headline shows in June!
This is one of our loyal customers who believe it or not is also called Dave 🤣
What a morning! Thank you so much to everyone who came down for Record Store Day, first in line was queuing from 1:30! We say this every year but the queue was the biggest we've seen it, we've barely had a minute spare all morning!
The queue has gone now and we do still have some stock left, if you fell short we may still be able to get hold of some leftover titles next week. Get in touch Monday if you're still looking and we'll do our best to get hold of them for you.
Thank you so much everyone! ❤️
The show must go on!
Our full Record Store Day stock list for this Saturday can be seen below, we’ve picked out a few of our favourite releases from this years drop!
As always we will be open from 9am and will be a first come first serve basis on the day. There’s usually a queue so we would recommend getting there early to avoid disappointment.
We can’t wait! We will see you this Saturday 18th 9am!

It’s with a heavy heart we have to announce that my Nan Diane Cain, co-owner of The Musical has passed away at the age of 88.
Just like her Mother before her, Diane dedicated her entire life to music. Diane begun working at her Mother Dorothy’s shop aged 13 and only retired due to the pandemic at the age of 83 after being forced to self isolate. Her encyclopaedic musical knowledge was second to none.
More than anything, Diane’s happiness lied within her family and her shop. Both myself and my Mum Paula only became involved when Diane retired initially just to help out Tony, then started the monumental task of the shops restoration in 2020.
We’re all just so happy that Diane got to see the shops transformation, and the result of a labour of love these last 6 years. Diane was able to see the whole building restored, the shop front restored and her former Mothers living room transformed into a beautiful second shop floor. We’ve unearthed so much of the shops history, solved 60 year old mysteries and were even recognised with a Blue Plaque for being England’s oldest independent record shop.
We really have poured our heart and soul into this little old record shop and for that we know how proud she was, as she’d often tell us.
Record Store Day this Saturday will continue as planned as that is what Diane would have wanted and we will continue to post news regarding the day as normal tomorrow.
Just under 2 weeks left to go until Record Store Day! Next Saturday 18th April we are celebrating @RSDUK with hundreds of limited edition records up for grabs! We say this every year but this is the most stock we’ve ordered with more titles than ever, we’re still waiting on more boxes to land!
Once the last remaining boxes have landed we will upload our full stock list for the day to confirm what titles we have. I can let all the Swifties know now though, we have x40 Taylor Swift!
As always we will be open from 9am and will be a first come first serve basis on the day, we’re strictly not allowed to reserve any stock to give everyone an equal chance of getting their hands on the goodies. There’s usually a queue so would recommend getting there early to avoid disappointment. Keep your eyes peeled next week for our full stock list!
Almost one week to go until #RSD26! 🎉

We’ve just had a lovely afternoon welcoming Julia Baird, John Lennon’s sister & friends to the shop!
It was a fascinating insight to hear Julia’s stories and for us to be able to tell the shops connection to John Lennon who regularly frequented the shop along with Pete Best in the early 1960’s when they both stayed at Haymans Green.
We will now be stocking Julia’s book “Imagine This” a book about the true story of John Lennon's childhood that had never been told. Thanks to Julia & friends for dropping in and for signing the piano!
@TheMusicalBoxRS in Tuebrook has been spinning since 1947 and still feels gloriously alive: 4 generations, shelves covering every decade, dedicated Beatles section, and upstairs space packed with memorabilia and archive finds. A true Liverpool institution. https://t.co/V8TtK803Mp
Less than a month to go until we celebrate Record Store Day!
In case you missed it Saturday 18th April we will be taking part in @RSDUK with hundreds of super limited edition records up for grabs!
All the wish lists have now been ordered. Keep an eye out over the next few weeks as we will keep you all updated with our stock list. As always it will be a first come serve basis on the day and we’ll be open from 9am.
We can’t wait! See you all soon!
Calling all Swifties for this last minute Record Store Day addition!
Landing next month as part of the Record Store Day drop is this super limited 7” single of Taylor Swifts “Elizabeth Taylor” as a one off release pressed in violet glitter vinyl. No represses. No second chances. When they’re gone, they’re gone!
Available to pick up from the shop Saturday 18th April from 9:00am as part of the Record Store Day drop list. First come first serve on the day!
Now and then! 2001-2026
We guessed around 25 years ago late 2001. Same counter, same shelves, same cabinet! On the wall you can see a Pink Floyd Echoes compilation poster which had just been released as well as Robbie Williams Sing When You're Winning. Think it's about time to replace them speakers though!
The new addition to our upstairs shop floor, the blingy-est grammar phone we’ve ever seen which couldn’t look anymore fitting for the room!
As modelled by Loki! Just a reminder we are dog friendly, so please feel free to bring your four legged friend along with you for a dig 🐶
