A third of E.coli infections are now resistant to antibiotics and those who are infected with resistant strains are twice as likely to die. Fiona Reakes-Wells @TheNSAMRC@DrDianeAshiru@Rabia_Ahm3d#TheNSAMRC
Huge thanks to the fantastic professionals from @NHSBSolCCG who spoke yesterday at #TheNSAMRC in preparation for #WAAW2019
Incredibly informative and engaging talks: we are very grateful!
@rakhi2382, Dr Stephen Banham @MicrobLog_me_uk and Shahzad Razaq.

There was some very interesting questions for the panel including:
- Should AMR a part of healthcare student's curriculum?
- Why can't we develop new classes of antibiotics?
- Can AMR bacteria in food cause AMR in people?
For the final session of the day we had a multi-disciplinary panel "Why am I worried about AMR? Dental, Nursing, Veterinary and Medical cases"
Speakers: Rakhi Aggarwal, Dr Stephen Bentham, Fiona Reakes-Wells, James Russel, Dr Phil Thomson, Chioma Achi and Jaspreet Dhanda.
There was some very interesting questions for the panel including:
- Do we see cases of AMR in animals or just in humans?
- Which field contributes the most to the problem of AMR?
- Can antimicrobial cleaning products lead to resistance?
@TheNSAMRC @AntibioticGuardian
Chris Ganacias from Queens University Belfast gave a presentation on “Successful elimination of Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms with a novel bacteriophage
@QUBelfast
Olivia Knowles from Bart's and The London school of medicine and dentistry presented “Assessing Broad-Spectrum Antibiotic Prescribing in a Primary Care Setting”
@QMUL
Projects and partnerships which are using behaviour change as a tool to tackle AMR
- Commonwealth partnership for antimicrobial stewardship
- The change exchange project, lead by behavioral scientist and psychologists (case study of two hospitals in Ghana and Uganda)
The fourth talk of the day was by Dr Lucie Byrne-Davis on using behaviour change techniques to improve antimicrobial stewardship in Ghana and Uganda!

Key learning points:
-Knowledge alone doesn’t change behaviour
-Behavior is caused by capability, motivation, and opportunity.
-Impulsive plays a big part how we behave.
