The Somali soccer referee Omar Artan returned home to a hero's welcome after being denied entry to the United States, where he was set to officiate games during the FIFA World Cup.

Jubilant crowds in Mogadishu welcomed him at the airport, and he was a guest of honor at a local game. The 34-year-old was named Africa's referee of the year in 2025 and would have been the first Somali to officiate at a World Cup.
