The preliminary sequence from the #H5N1 human case in British Columbia has been posted, and it is not good news. The virus potentially has mutations that increase binding to human receptors. Analysis by a viral immunologist:
If the covid vax is what you’ve been depending on to prevent you from catching covid, then why have you had covid multiple times?
The vax is definitely worth getting because it lowers infection severity, but it doesn’t prevent infection!
Until we have a better vax, wear a mask.
Its not hard to be safe. It also happens to be the only way (for now), if you don't want to be a hermit.
Vaccines are insufficient. And unless you're going to hold a UVGI device or a HEPA unit with laminar airflow about 12" away from your face, for an entire social event, you MUST WEAR A RESPIRATOR.
If you don't want this to be the case for the rest of your life, join the fight to get 2nd generation vaccines and better antivirals as treatment (and antiviral treatment as prevention).
If this isn't your life right now, plan on a much shorter life.
4) The hospitalized BC teenager’s virus variant is indeed the same virus clade as found in poultry workers in Washington state by the CDC.

⚠️BREAKING—ICU Hospitalized human bird flu case in Canada now officially confirmed as H5N1. Worse, it is the same 2.3.4.4b virus clade (variant group) as the one found in BC🇨🇦 poultry and in Washington state🇺🇸! The hospitalized teenager (with no pre existing conditions) had no animal contact, does not live on farm, had “deterioration quite rapid” and now critical in ICU with ARDS. Canada officials says infectious period is 2 days **prior to symptoms** (ie asymptomatic transmission) and infectious up to 10 days.
Presumably the "people should stop talking about COVID and move on with their lives" minimizers are talking about COVID a lot these days, given how many studies undermine their narrative. Seems like calm-mongering is pretty stressful and always being wrong is a lot of work.
Why buy anything on #applemusic when they make it so you can’t access it anywhere?? I don’t want a #subscription for what I own. I at least want my money back for the albums you won’t let me access. This #ripoff is so annoying!!!
So a lot of people who catch Covid go through a period of vulnerability to other opportunistic infections in the following months.
This has been one of the biggest summer waves.
Expect one of the worst winters ever for other infections.

"We need people to get infected early / repeatedly so that the virus will evolve to become seasonal / endemic / mild" is so fundamentally, deeply ignorant of how evolution works that it's hard to even know where to begin in correcting it.
Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) is associated with increased risk of developing:
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Multiple sclerosis
- Type 1 diabetes
- Celiac disease
- ME/CFS
- Lupus
A new EBV study in multiple sclerosis (MS) reveals an important clue that might explain this association...🧵
The privilege behind a statement like this. 😥
"Today is one of the worst days of my life. What I'm feeling right now is beyond any defeat I've ever experienced...I no longer understand the world."
Just because he can't compete in the Olympics.
One of our friends, in their forties, realised for certain this week that they can't survive on their own.
They need care, because of the conditions caused by their covid infection.
Not everything is COVID, but not nothing is COVID either.
Unless you're writing a health news story, of course. Then whatever it is remains a total mystery and COVID shouldn't be mentioned under any circumstances.
