Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter. Thomas Jefferson
Thank you to all that worked hard to protect freedom of speech and the press for students in Nebraska! While we came up short by three votes for a super majority to end debate, we elevated the need for basic protections of constitutional rights from government interference.
@Adam_Morfeld It’s a vibe with these people. I have a BA in journalism and an M.Ed. in secondary teaching, and yet my students’ speech was screened by admin without those credentials. Never quite made sense...
@janetherevelatr@N4thanLeach@NebraskaSower It might be a good SNL sketch. The angry senator who constantly feels wronged, so he argues against sensible things for hours.
@JayLinton93 A student might thank them, sure. But if we shift our focus from what MIGHT happen to what IS happening, it should be evident that protecting the Constitutional rights of all is more important than preventing the “what ifs” of few.
@NEStudentsLB88 An admin once tried to censor my student for a column he wrote about how teachers can’t force students to stand for the pledge of allegiance. Admin said it was “inflammatory.” After a few days, they relented. *nothing happened*
@JayLinton93 A faculty adviser will be required to train these student journalists how to practice sound and ethical journalism. The bill specifically outlines that, yet opponents are...pretending it’s not there? Willfully ignoring it? Not reading the bill? 🤔
@DoubleJayAlum@davesund You listened to all eight hours of the filibuster? Maybe you don’t consider it “bashing,” but there were certainly no endorsements of the students/teachers to abide by the provisions of this bill. Call it what you want
