Such an amazing day at PRISM, the Program for Research, Interviewing, and Scholarship Mentorship. PRISM hosted a graduate student panel coordinated by Kaitlin Blakemore and directed by Dr. Schisler. Current Ph.D., M.D., and M.D./Ph.D. students shared what their interview journeys were really like and gave our PRISM students honest, helpful advice as they prepare for their upcoming application cycles.
We are so grateful for our panelists and for Dr. Schisler’s leadership in building a program that truly supports students and opens doors for them.
We are proud of Dr. Jonathan Schisler for presenting at the ACVP
Annual Meeting 2025 in New Orleans, LA!
Dr. Schisler presented "CXCL5: Guardian of Vascular Health in Aging and Space - Protective Roles in Atherosclerosis, Reverse Cholesterol Transport, and Adaptive Space Biology," as part of the Opening Plenary: Insights Into Aging - Explorations of Space Biomedicine, Systems Biology, and Animal Models session.
Congratulations to Dr. Schisler and the team for continuing to advance research on vascular health and space biology! #unc #chapelhill #researcher

We are so proud of the amazing work by Becky Sanchez-Hodge, our Lab Manager here at the Schisler Lab and MHI Summer Research Coordinator!
Becky did an incredible job presenting at the Cape Cod Conference, where she shared her research on how exogenous CXCL5 delivery limits plaque formation in a CXCL5-haploinsufficient atherosclerosis model.
She also presented at the Pharmacology Retreat 2025, continuing to showcase the impactful research being done in our lab.
Congratulations to Becky and everyone who played a role in this important work!

Ataxia UK has recently awarded funding to Dr Stefan Hauser & his research team on spinocerebellar ataxia type-3 (SCA3). Those with SCA3 inherit one mutated version of the SCA3 gene from one parent
& one healthy version of the gene from their other parent. https://t.co/20ufV6Mp6X
🚀 Big News in Neurodegenerative Disease Research and Proteostasis! 🧠✨
We’re thrilled to share our latest paper in the EMBO Journal: “E3 ubiquitin ligase CHIP facilitates cAMP and cGMP signalling cross-talk by polyubiquitinating PDE9A”.
🔬 Key Discoveries:
CHIP-PDE9A Interaction: CHIP binds to PDE9A, promoting its degradation. Dysfunctional CHIP leads to PDE9A buildup and neuron death.
Signaling Pathways: cGMP/cAMP signaling cross-talk is vital for neuron survival. Elevated PKA levels worsen PDE9A buildup.
Therapeutic Potential: Inhibiting PDE9A or boosting CHIP expression restores signaling balance and protects neurons.
📚 Abstract: CHIP mutations increase PDE9A levels, disrupting cGMP hydrolysis and mitophagy, leading to neuron death. Targeting PDE9A-CHIP interaction offers a novel therapeutic strategy for CHIP-related ataxia.
