How Exactly Did DP Rigathi Gachagua Get Himself Hated By Everyone, Everywhere?

Reflecting on DP Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment vote at the National Assembly in which, 281/349 MPs supported his sacking, I am inclined to conclude that the man actually has a bigger personal problem than we may be seeing.

You see, when the framers of our Constitution were setting the threshold for the impeachment of a President or a Deputy President at 2/3 votes of all members of the house, they were very intentional. They were creating a scenario where pulling an impeachment would almost be an impossible affair unless it is very very necessary.

By setting the bar that high, Constitution of Kenya 2010 drafters wanted to safeguard the holders of those two critical offices from unnecessary malice that characterizes our politics. They understood too well that, it would be extremely difficult for anyone to pull a 2/3 considering the polarized nature of our politics where, even the majority party never has more than 180 MPs in the house at any particular point. That is why, even at the height of former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s war with his then Deputy William Ruto (2018~2022), younger Kenyatta never tried to pull the impeachment card because he knew too well that, trying to marshal the necessary numbers would be an exercise in futility.

Yet, that unimaginable the writers of our constitution thought could never happen has happened in 2024 courtesy of one Geoffrey Rigathi Gachagua. His ouster was not just supported by the minimum 233 MPs but rather, a whopping 282 legislators!

Now, such rejection can only emanate from one thing; a very serious problem in the character, personality and modus operandi of Rigathi Gachagua which triggered deep rooted hatred from the MPs.

It is not news for one to be hated by one, or two, or ten or even twenty MPs when you are a Deputy President. That is actually the normal since you can never please everyone. However, it is crazy for you to be an enemy of almost the entire house; literary! In such a scenario, it can only be you who is the problem; and a serious one for that matter!

For the two years he has served as Kenya’s 2nd in Command, Gachagua must have rubbed so many people the wrong way; and in a very big and painful manner.

Even more astounding are the findings of my preliminary review of his standing at the Senate which is set to prosecute and vote on his case next week. Apparently, things are set to be even worse for him there with only 11 out of 67 Senators said to be on his side; and even some of the 11 are said to be shifting camps.

Therefore, as the impeachment drama enters homestretch and the son of Mathira is sent back to Hiriga village, it would be very necessary for him to sit down and do a serious personal evaluation after it’s all done. He needs to do an in-depth soul~searching and find out where exactly his problem is that made him get hated by everyone, everywhere.

Otherwise, it might be the end of the road for his short political career.

After the painful lesson of the 1992 multiparty elections in which a costly split between Kibaki and Matiba gave Moi an unlikely small margin win in the presidential election, the people of Mt Kenya appear to have taken an unspoken oath of always remaining united no matter what.

1997 ~ With Kibaki.

2002 ~ With Kibaki despite Uhuru being there.

2007 ~ With Kibaki mpaka wakaleta Tharaka Nithi.

2013 & 2017 ~ With Uhuru.

2022 ~ Unanimously with Ruto despite Uhuru telling them otherwise.

So, I am here wondering, this other unity ya Murima tumekuwa tukihubiriwa huku ndio gani? Because the Moutain has always been united and remains united.

Sometimes, I ask myself if DP Gachagua, in his heyday, was digesting some of the things he was saying first before saying them …..

You are a Deputy President of Kenya, 2nd Most Powerful Person, you share in the Presidential Duty of being a Symbol of National Unity, a person whose words instantly become government policy which is replicated downwards, na unasimama unasema your government will be operating on the shares basis and the people who did not vote for you must stay hungry …..

Yet what you are talking about being shared is the national cake, which comes from taxes, which all Kenyans dutifully pay, political sides notwithstanding ……

Na unafikiria umeongea vizuri sana and you even defend that statement again and again?

We are now celebrating and applauding Jimmy Wanjigi as a champion of the people’s welfare; a man whose story stinks to high heavens …..

Were it not for people like Wanjigi whose only competence in life is engineering multibillion~shilling scandals that leave our Treasury and economy heavily dented, regime after regime, our country could be way far ahead ……

An expert of selling hot air to govt and getting paid heavily for it, Wanjigi has all over sudden mutated into an anti~graft crusader yet even the folk and knife he uses at his dining table in his Muthaiga 44 address were bought using proceeds of corruption ….

It is now emerging that some of the bodies retrieved from Kware, Mukuru Kwa Njenga could have been dumped there way before the #RutoMustGo Gen Z #Maandamano ….

Yet, in the past two days, we have seen high~gear concerted efforts by some members of the civil society, who have been in the #Maandamano frontline, to try link the Kware bodies with alleged extra~judicial killings by the govt …..

That is why I maintain, even as we agree that President Ruto has been running a messed up administration, we need to be sober in the entire conversation ….

Of late, I have seriously started reconsidering my opinion on the genuineness of the entire Gen Z revolt … Could someone somewhere be pulling the strings and taking advantage of the innocence of our young people to advance a sinister agenda? ……

We need to be careful not to destroy our country removing Ruto …..

Younger Kenyatta had to therefore have a Hard Decisions Moment of foregoing friendship and dropping the axe during his legendary 2015 State of The Nation Address. And from that point, his regime got a proper direction.

Fast forward 2024, two years into power and President Dr William Ruto is staring at the Allies Entitlement Curse right in the eye. His regime has been rocked by a wave of incompetence and graft, mostly in dockets under the closest of allies or politicians he appointed because he owed them, having helped him win the 2022 polls. The transport sector manned by Ruto’s right hand man Kipchumba Murkomen is accidents~ridden, energy under the president’s long time ally Davis Chirchir has become circus~powered, health of Susan Nakhumicha is in ICU and agriculture captained by Mithika Linturi is one big graft~fertilized crime scene. Most disturbing is the fact that, the problem sits right at the dockets which form the core of Ruto’s manifesto.

It is therefore imperative that President Ruto, though not a historian, now takes time to reflect on the times of his predecessors when they sat where he is sitting, identify when the Allies Entitlement Curse hit them, compare notes with his current situation, confirm that he is indeed in that inevitable Hard Decisions Moment and proceed to do the necessary. As the clever and crafty politician he is, Ruto must not allow himself to get to the 1982 coup moment of Moi or the embarrassing 2005 referendum loss of Kibaki.

Ruto must put emotions, friendship and election win indebtedness aside and reorganize his regime, not because of the 2027 elections, but if he wants to secure himself a clean legacy. And time is of essence. If Moi had moved and acted fast enough, his legacy would not have the 1982 coup blemish. If Kibaki had moved quick enough, his rich legacy of unmatched economic transformation would not have ghosts of 2007/8 post election violence haunting it.

Ruto must act now. And if not now, then, now now!
