1. First book of the year finished ‘Fairyland’ by Paul McAuley. A great book about a man’s quest to search for what he thinks is his lost love but he may be just controlled by nanotech called fembots. A truly bizarre novel centring around human created “fairies”. Great stuff!

Drilling the North Sea won’t help people across the UK struggling with their energy bills - most of the oil and gas from these new sites would be sold to the highest bidder on international markets. But the bigger picture is that green industrial strategy requires coherent and credible policy signals, to give investors confidence that the ‘clean energy superpower’ mission of Labour’s manifesto is still the direction of travel - which this drilling would undermine. Flip flopping on policy is part of the reason that the UK ranks 28th out of 31 OECD countries for business investment. The government should not be pressured into locking itself into legacy industries or slashing the climate budget - instead it should double down on its clean power and net zero missions by placing them at the heart of the No 10 economic strategy, and making tools like the National Wealth Fund operate at the scale required to shape new green markets and ensure the public shares the rewards as they grow. Investment in the green supply chains of the future has been shown to return dividends to the taxpayer - every £1 of public money spent on net zero delivers a return of £2.2-4.1 and delivers benefits we all care about like cleaner air, warmer homes and healthier diets (CCC, 2026).

The government has overruled a Tower Hamlets Council decision and disregarded enormous local opposition to a proposed AI data centre on Brick Lane in East London, one of the most densely-populated areas in the country.

This is a scandalous intervention from the government that should be reversed immediately. We cannot allow private profiteers to squeeze the life and soul out of our communities, especially when their endeavours are a dangerous mix of odious social cleansing and environmental damage.
