Happy Birthday to America’s greatest white man and our name sake, John Brown. We hope to live up to his spirit, courage, and conviction. Born in Torrington we feel deep connection to him and the men and women who supported his movement whose ancestors we’re proud to call friends.
Gaza was indeed beautiful. However, it also housed refugee camps like Al-Shati, with a population density of 78,000/km², and Jabalia Camp, where the density was 35,000/km². Gaza suffered from electricity cuts, high unemployment, a contaminated and very limited water supply, extremely high population density, and severe restrictions on freedom of movement. Cancer patients died, students lost scholarships, and malnutrition was a serious issue that many people struggled with. Each day, Gaza released 28.5 million gallons of wastewater into the Mediterranean, equivalent to 43 Olympic-sized swimming pools, due to a lack of spare parts and power supply to operate sewage treatment facilities. While Gaza retained its beauty, it was impoverished, de-developed, and faced serious existential questions, particularly concerning its demographics as its population was projected to double by 2050. Unfortunately, no one in the international community seemed interested in grappling with the Gaza issue. Gaza was left to endure Israel's periodic bombardment campaigns, and Palestinians there were abandoned to figure things out on their own. An explosion in Gaza was inevitable; it was not a matter of if it would happen, but how and when.
