I was fortunate. I knew my last football game was my last game. I was able to soak in and enjoy the sights and sounds of the game knowing I was done. Most professional football players are injured or fired and never have that goodbye tour experience. I can count on one hand the number of teammates during my twelve-year career who retired when the Broncos still wanted them to play another year.

Tonight the Broncos play the Falcons in their first preseason game, and it will be the last time some of these players ever get to play football. People like to tell me, “You look like you could still play.” That’s very kind but also very far from reality. Even the guys who only have a cup of coffee with an NFL team and get released are unbelievable athletes, or they would never be invited to an NFL training camp. I’m three times as old as the rookies and have had 19 football related surgeries.

I’m excited for the rookies getting to suit up and play in the NFL. It’s a dream come true. Years of work and struggle will be justified when they run out on the field tonight. We had 14 rookies make the team in 1983. This team may have 3 or 4 rookies make the final roster with some others on the practice squad. For those on the back end of the roster it’s now or never. Best of luck young men! Go Broncos!
