https://t.co/H5IxfpXszR A disillusioned member of @SJC_UBC speaks out on Reddit against coordinated slander campaigns and smear tactics in the AMS elections, expressing frustration at the organization's deviation from its original purpose of promoting social justice.
AMS UBC is significantly reducing their AMS Block Party tickets from $60+ down to $10, and issuing refunds to those who have already bought tickets.
This move comes as several music festivals in British Columbia have been cancelled for 2023 due to challenges.
@eshanabhangu@SJC_UBC@PrideUBC AMS Council won't vote on the Advocacy Committee policy changes tonight, following backlash and pressure. Changes are off the agenda, "pending further consultation". There will be a final council meeting on Monday. People can still attend tonight to voice concerns.
UBC AMS President, @eshanabhangu, and her office are once again under scrutiny, following weeks of backlash.
The latest controversy stems from Bhangu's proposal of a motion that seeks to prohibit conversations surrounding international political issues and global corporations.
@eshanabhangu The move has attracted criticism from various quarters, including @SJC_UBC and @PrideUBC, with some accusing her of attempting to stifle important conversations, advocacy, and activism related to international politics and the activities of large global corporations.
Disendorsed by AMS UBC Resource Groups, @eshanabhangu continues to face backlash for disregarding progressive values after being elected as AMS President and promising to centre social justice.
A tale for those who exploit social justice causes only to disappoint - @SJC_UBC.
This is what happens when you run on a faux progressive platform to win votes but disregard those values once elected. Eshana has lost the trust of many progressive groups on campus, including the SJC and Pride.
Prolific UBC student politician and AMS President, Eshana Bhangu, received the lowest votes among 4 candidates vying for the Arts Rep seat on the AMS Council, raising concerns about students' trust in her.
This comes after her team pushed to remove an Arts seat from AMS Council.
A UBC Reddit post alleges that Kamil Kanji @Kamil7860K, the lone AMS VPAUA candidate, has promised someone a position in his office. It is not uncommon for AMS executives to hire individuals they know.
But, incentivizing voters with a job is not an accepted campaigning method.
Keen to hear from AMS VPAUA candidate @Kamil7860K on this matter. Will Kanji be addressing these concerns:
Amidst discussions on academic freedom, UBC prof, @charlesmenzies, has requested a list of potentially problematic motions put forward by professors on the UBC Senate.
UBC students have reported that there are calls for the resignation of the lone AMS VP External candidate, Tina Tong. If these calls are not met, some UBC students are allegedly planning to launch a Vote No campaign.
@UbysseyNews has reported that Tong, has issued an apology.
UBC students will be voting yes/no for the uncontested AMS VP External candidate, who said the VPD increase in funding does not concern her.
And she is ignorant of the concerns of Indigenous and radicalized UBC Vancouver students:
We're honouring Kyle's legacy by appointing him as Deputy Editor of The Ubugle. Kyle believed in our success and we're grateful for him. Rest in peace, Kyle. Your contributions will always be remembered. <3
My heart aches for Kyle Sohn's family. I am so horrified and disappointed to hear that UBC , and I echo the calls for UBC SHCS / Safety and Risk Services to review its internal policies and procedures around emergency response.
UBC students will be voting yes/no for the uncontested AMS VP External candidate, who said the VPD increase in funding does not concern her.
And she is ignorant of the concerns of Indigenous and radicalized UBC Vancouver students:
Tong says this does not concern her. When asked, she said she has not heard about concerns Indigenous and other racialized students have with increased police funding.
@uglyblender 100% agree. I was one of the people who advocated to Richmond City Council about the rainbow crosswalk and I got harassed by other ppl in Richmond. Richmond hates Indigenous, homeless, trans, gay ppl and it’s awful. Thank you for sharing this 🍓
I can't recall the last time I witnessed such a ridiculous violation of basic integrity and democratic processes set in place to deal with the governance of over $700,000 in student fees. The SLFS Leadership, old and new, should look up some basic principles on good governance.
