During today's All Hands On Prevention outreach event in Columbia Heights, @AARPDC presented a check for a $15,000 grant from the AARP Community Challenge to expand access to free smoke alarms/improve fire safety for senior residents.

A simple ritual, done daily: writing the names of those working.

Written with chalk or marker on firehouse walls or dry erase boards, the Riding List in an FDNY firehouse is an active roster that details the firefighters working a given tour and where they're assigned on the rig.

Then the terrorist attacks happened on September 11, 2001, and the Riding List became so much more than just a list.

For 25 years, the FDNY has preserved the original Riding Lists from the morning of 9/11 inside firehouses across New York City. Chief of Department John Esposito reflects on what it means to see those names still there and why these ordinary tour rosters have become one of the most powerful, tangible reminders of a Department that lost so much but is still standing.

A quarter of a century later, the names remain. We will Never Forget.

Firefighter Augeri sustained injuries during a recent fire response.

Fire extended from vehicle to two row homes. All fire extinguished.

One adult female evaluated, refused treatment transport.

Earlier today, following the fatal fire in the 4600 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. SW, members of the DC Fire and EMS Fire Prevention Division returned to the neighborhood to provide residents with critical fire safety information and resources.
