“No one wants to see a wolf run over with a snowmobile. It’s not manly. It’s not cool.”

On February 29, 2024, a man named Cody Roberts (age 42, resident of Daniel, Sublette County) allegedly ran over a wolf with a snowmobile in a “predator zone” of Wyoming (where wolves are legally treated as predators) and inflicted grievous injury.

After the crash, the wolf was reportedly alive, badly injured (internal and external trauma, unable to stand or behave normally) and the man then transported the animal to a local bar (Green River Bar) in Daniel, Wyoming. There, he displayed the wolf (its muzzle allegedly bound with tape) for photos and patrons.

Subsequently, the wolf was shot and killed behind the bar. Initially, the wildlife authorities cited Roberts for illegal possession of a live wild animal, and fined him $250. That was under a misdemeanor wildlife statute.

Later, in August 2025, a grand jury in Sublette County indicted Roberts on a felony animal cruelty charge under Wyoming law. If convicted, he faces up to 2 years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

After the outrage, the Wyoming Legislature did discuss (and passed in some form) a bill (HB 275) that would more explicitly address cruelty to predators—especially when they are injured and linger. But the broader practice of using vehicles (snowmobiles, ATVs) for predator kills remains legal in much of the state.

Even hunters and ranchers know blatant brutality makes them look bad. It’s time to hold our systems to a higher standard.
