Air India initiated the process to configure crew rostering software two-three months prior to the November 1 deadline and rolled out the changes a fortnight before the deadline.

Air India also possesses a significant bench strength of pilots, many of whom were hired post-privatisation. 

The current strength on Boeing 777 and Airbus A350 fleets is in surplus of requirements. Those flying Airbus A350 are getting only four flights in a month on average due to high pilot numbers and limited operations.

Boeing 777 captains have been offered the option to train on the Boeing 787 fleet in view of aircraft additions next year

Indigo crisis: The aviation minister puts the blame squarely on IndiGo.

“It is IndiGo that has messed up its internal crew management and rostering system,” Civil Aviation Minister , Ram Mohan Naidu, throws IndiGo under the bus, absolving the ministry of any of the blame that has put lakhs and lakhs of passengers in utter misery and the aviation industry in jeopardy.

Domestic flights took the maximum hit.

International flights were largely protected — estimated to be less than 10% cancellations, mostly on connecting legs — because these routes deliver USD revenue, higher yields, lower fuel uplifting costs, and cancelling overseas flights triggers tougher passenger compensation rules under foreign regulations and reputational issues.

In short, they shielded profitable high margin international routes and sacrificed low-margin domestic sectors, creating visible pain for flyers and public pressure — a convenient backdrop to justify a push for FDTL rollback.

That’s not random chaos — that’s calculated strategic planning !

I’m team Indigo. Airline industry is one of the most volatile industries and very prone to external shocks.

Taxes on ATF in India have increased by 60% in last 4 years even though global prices have fallen down in the same period.

Indigo incurred 2600cr losses in Q2 2026. They didn’t have money to hire fresh pilots after govt retarded rules around weekly rest of pilots. If anything, onus lies on the govt for fucking up an industry and killing it with taxes and over regulations. Govt withdrawing this rule is them implicitly accepting their mistake.

Elsewhere, govts support home grown carriers and help them expand globally with favorable laws. This is because aviation is strategic industries which can’t be dominated by foreign players. But we have government which first instinct is to always kill the goose with insane taxes and regulations.

You do realise the 20–25-year-old girl at the counter, trying her best to address every passenger’s concerns with whatever little information she has, is not responsible for your flight delay, right? Paying ₹5,000 or ₹10,000 for a ticket doesn’t mean you are personally funding her salary.

If you truly have “concern” and “courage”, then direct your voice towards the airline’s top management, the Civil Aviation Ministry, the Minister, or even the Prime Minister who carefully created this duopoly by finishing off every other airline.

Courage isn’t measured by how loudly you shout at someone who has zero power. Courage is whether you can do the same in front of real power. This is not bravery or manliness; this is cheap theatrics and misdirected anger.

Therefore, the DGCA issued new regulations, following court orders. All airlines were instructed more than a year ago to recruit more pilots and staff and prepare for the new regulations.
