An Open Letter to the Executive Governor of Kano State [Abba Kabir Yusif @Kyusufabba]: Ensuring Equity in Educational Opportunities at KUST Wudil
December 12, 2023
Your Excellency,
I trust this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. I write with a deep sense of appreciation for your recent decision to alleviate the financial burden on Kano indigenous students studying at Kano University of Science and Technology, Wudil (KUST Wudil) by reducing their school fees by 50%.
This progressive step undoubtedly contributes to the advancement of education within our state.
However, I wish to draw your attention to a matter of concern that has surfaced in the wake of this positive development.
While I applaud the reduction for indigenous students, I have learned with a heavy heart that there has been a significant increase of over 80% in the school fees for non-indigenous students.
Comparatively, the school fees of indigenous students was revised downward from 32000 Naira to 13000 Naira but for non indigenous students it was revised upward from 52000 Naira to 98000 Naira.
This rise, Your Excellency, poses a substantial challenge for these students and their families, making the pursuit of education an even more formidable task.
I am well aware of the financial considerations that govern such decisions, and I deeply appreciate the complexities involved.
Nevertheless, I believe that the spirit of your administration is one of inclusivity and fairness. It is with this belief that I implore you to reconsider the fee structure, ensuring that the benefits of your administration's goodwill extend to all students at KUST Wudil.
Non-indigenous students contribute meaningfully to the diversity and vibrancy of the academic community. They are not only students but also integral members of the larger Kano community. Their pursuit of education is a shared investment in the progress and prosperity of our great state.
By fostering an environment where both indigenous and non-indigenous students can access education without disproportionate financial burdens, you will be sending a powerful message about the inclusivity and unity that define the essence of Kano State. This, I believe, aligns perfectly with your vision for our state's future.
I appreciate the challenges you face and the responsibilities that come with your esteemed position.
Your leadership has undoubtedly brought about positive changes, and I am confident that, with your wisdom and commitment, you will address this matter in a manner that reflects the principles of fairness and justice.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Abubakar Sadiq Danladi
