An inquest heard that 18-year-old Cai Rhys Davies from Llantrisant, Wales, became the victim of a sextortion scam run by a criminal network based in Ivory Coast.

Scammers posing as a young woman convinced him to send intimate images before demanding money and threatening to send them to his family and friends and publish them on YouTube.

Hours later, Cai attempted suicide and died four days later in the hospital from a hypoxic brain injury.

Police traced the fake account to Ivory Coast, describing it as part of a large-scale operation, but said no suspects could be identified for prosecution.

The coroner concluded that becoming the victim of the sextortion scam more than minimally contributed to his death and called for greater public awareness of sextortion scams.
