There are two lessons that I learned while working in the freight industry. I've carried these lessons throughout my life and vocations.

The first lesson is that you need to understand how power works. My ex-boss used to say, "You need to know which side of the window you stand on." What often happens, and I would attribute this to current social ills, is that people in power get high off their own supply and forget where to draw the line. You may be a big shot in your company, but you're a nobody somewhere else. You need to understand that.

The second lesson, which is closely related to the first, is that you need to understand leverage. I've seen CEOs of multi-billion rand companies being cut down to size by a mere clerk at Customs office. Those guys will humble you if you think you're all that because they understand the power of leverage. You need them, they don't need you. Know when you don't have leverage in any situation and act accordingly. When you do, realise the limits of your power.
