NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS (NANS)
27th June, 2026
PRESS RELEASE
NANS CONDEMNS THE DISPLACEMENT OF LEGACY HOSTEL STUDENTS IN IFITE AWKA, ANAMBRA STATE, DEMANDS IMMEDIATE GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION
I write with utmost resentment and grave concern over the plight of the displaced students of Legacy Hostel, Ifite Awka, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Anambra State.
The national leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has been inundated with distress calls and disturbing reports from students who have been rendered homeless for the past 10 days. Reports available to us indicate that Legacy Hostel developed visible cracks on its walls and was on the verge of collapse barely 24 hours before the Anambra State Government eventually demolished the building. Regrettably, since the demolition of the hostel, the students have been left stranded and homeless, with neither the Anambra State Government nor the hostel management taking responsibility for their welfare, despite the fact that they had occupied the hostel for no more than four months after paying for a full one-year accommodation.
Going forward, we condemn this act as cruelty in its purest form. No responsible government would demolish a 54-room hostel without first putting adequate measures in place for the safe evacuation and welfare of its occupants. To be clear, students are not animals. You cannot render them homeless and subsequently expose them to dangers ranging from robbery and kidnapping to rape, especially amid the prevailing insecurity confronting our nation. We condemn this cruelty and inhumane treatment of our students in its entirety. One must begin to question the sense of responsibility of both the hostel management and the state government. Who leaves over 100 students homeless without looking back? This is callousness in its purest form.
Furthermore, we are aware that many of these students have been hospitalized, yet there has been no care or concern from either the hostel management or the state government to ensure their medical treatment and overall well-being. These students need immediate intervention and relief.
To this end, we call on the Anambra State Government, under the leadership of Governor Charles Soludo, whose administration carried out the demolition that left these students homeless, to immediately:
1. Direct the management of Legacy Hostel to immediately refund, in full, all hostel fees paid by every student affected by the demolition of the 54 occupied rooms.
2. Urgently provide temporary alternative accommodation or adequate financial assistance to enable all displaced students secure decent shelter without further delay.
3. Immediately assume full responsibility for the medical treatment and welfare of all affected students currently receiving treatment in hospitals as a result of the trauma, exposure, and hardship occasioned by their displacement.
4. Immediately investigate the circumstances surrounding this negligence and ensure that all responsible property owners and other culpable parties are held accountable in accordance with the law.
5. Provide appropriate welfare support and compensation to all affected students for the losses, trauma, and hardship they have suffered as a result of the demolition and the failure to provide immediate assistance.
6. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to immediately intervene by providing emergency relief materials, temporary shelter, medical support, and other humanitarian assistance to the displaced students until a permanent solution is reached.
Great Nigerian students, you can always trust us never to compromise on issues affecting your welfare. We shall continue to speak for you, and we shall continue to represent your interests with vigor and unflinching passion. You are not alone. We are with you, and nothing shall discourage us.
Signed:

Students of Nnamdi Azikiwe University whose lodge was demølished in Ifite, Awka, by the state government after the building showed signs of collåpse have cried out after being left homeless for days, with no assistance from either the lodge owner or the state government.
According to the students, the building began showing signs of collapse on June 15, 2026, prompting the state government to demolish it to prevent a possible disåster.
Since then, they say they have not heard from the lodge owner or the state government regarding alternative accommodation, leaving them stranded.
The affected students have called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo, their senator, and members of the House of Representatives to urgently intervene and address their situation.
We are calling on the Governor of Anambra state His Excellency Prof Charles Chukwuma Soludo to come to our aid at this difficult moment.
