Rethinking Dairy: How Kampundu Gorethe is Leading Agricultural Transformation in Rulindo with CDAT Support

In Shyorongi Sector, @rulindodistrict, Kampundu Gorethe is proving that with the right support and determination, traditional farming can be transformed into a thriving agribusiness.

For years, Gorethe practiced dairy farming the way many rural families do, with local cows and limited resources. Milk production was inconsistent and low, making it hard to rely on livestock as a primary source of income. But when she heard a radio announcement from the Commercialization and De-Risking for Agricultural Transformation (#CDAT) Project calling for farmers to submit business proposals for matching grants, she knew it was time to shift.

With a clear vision and ambition to modernize her farm, she submitted her project, and it was approved.

Through the #CDAT Matching Grant, funded by the @WorldBank and implemented by @RwandaAgriBoard through its Single Project Implementation Unit (#SPIU), Gorethe received financial support worth 27 million Rwandan Francs (RWF), which covered 50% of her total project cost. She and her family contributed the remaining 29 million RWF, demonstrating their strong commitment to building a sustainable dairy enterprise.

With the combined investment, Gorethe constructed modern livestock shelters, installed a water dam sheet, purchased high-yielding dairy cows, and set up storage tanks to improve farm operations and hygiene. She began with 10 cows, and soon after, her daily milk production rose to over 120 liters, all of which are sold with ease thanks to reliable market connections.

Understanding that livestock farming comes with risks, Gorethe enrolled her cows in the Tekana Urishingiwe Muhinzi-Mworozi program, the National Agricultural Insurance Scheme (#NAIS). When she recently lost a cow, her policy through Radiant Insurance compensated her with 1 million RWF, allowing her to maintain financial stability and continue operations without major setbacks.

Today, Gorethe owns 17 cows, including calves and bulls. Her farm also produces organic manure, which she uses both for her crop fields and animal fodder, supporting a circular, eco-friendly farming system. Her enterprise has also created employment opportunities for youth and contributes to nutrition efforts in the local community.

Reflecting on her journey, she shares:

“This project has truly changed my life. I’m thankful to the @RwandaGov, #CDAT, and RAB-SPIU for empowering farmers like me. I’m especially grateful to my husband, who has stood beside me through every step.”

To other women across the country, Gorethe offers a message of encouragement:

“Don’t fear to start. Don’t fear to grow. Be bold and take advantage of the opportunities available. When you believe in yourself and stay focused, progress will follow.”

From modest beginnings to a growing agribusiness, Kampundu Gorethe is now an inspiring example of how women in agriculture are leading Rwanda’s transformation, not only by improving their own livelihoods, but by building healthier, stronger communities.

Investing in Community driven initiatives: key towards fighting against Non-communicable .
✅ In our community, we are taking action to fight Non-Communicable Diseases (#NCDs) , the silent killers behind about 48% of deaths in Rwanda’s health facilities and millions of people globally.

✅ Through local initiatives and social media campaigns, we spread education and awareness, helping families understand risks like hypertension (affecting nearly 17% of adults) ,diabetes and other #NCDs as well as preventive measures. Influencers like @harerimana_tito are leading the change.

✅ Rwanda through local and national campaigns is committed to promote healthy eating ,proper sanitation, and hygiene.
✅ Also through community sports, and body check-ups initiatives ,Rwanda prioritize the encouragement on early detection and investing in preventive measures for #NCDs.

✅ Leaders, Influencers, researchers and policy advocates are pushing for policy advocacy and strengthening implementations towards tackling NCDs in Rwanda.

Call to Action, With great progress in Rwanda, there still the need for:

1️⃣ Increase Investment in screening, prevention, and treatment programs.
2️⃣ Advance Policy Advocacy to ensure NCDs remain a top priority in health planning.
3️⃣ Support Research for evidence-based solutions tailored to Rwanda’s context.
4️⃣ Strengthen Community Engagement & Education through awareness, sports, and healthy lifestyle campaigns.

From September 24–26, we were honored to participate in a 3-day training on Gender-Transformative Reporting & Broadcasting, Positive Masculinity, Youth Engagement, and SRHR-HIV Prevention, organized by @rwamrec and @rrpplus in partnership with @UNFPARwanda and @UNAIDSRwanda, bringing together Rwandan journalists, influencers, and youth-led organizations.

The discussions focused on GBV, Positive Masculinity, and HIV prevention—equipping us to craft gender-responsive messages, amplify youth voices, and support #SRHR goals.

The main activities included clearing bushes, collecting garbage, and planting fruit trees (avocados, mangoes, and oranges).

These efforts not only beautified and cleaned the area but also supported long-term goals like improving nutrition, strengthening food security, and ensuring community members’ responsibility for protecting the environment.

Afterward, we held a discussion where our #GreenRising ambassadors, @salimsaleha2 and @Theddy227, shared testimonies about the environmental work they are leading through Green Rising. They encouraged fellow youth to actively protect and preserve their environment.

Following the ambassadors’ discussion, the Minister of State @XandrineUmutoni inspired the youth to embrace patriotism, avoid drug abuse, seize opportunities in environmental conservation, and strive for excellence in everything they do.

Today, together with @rrpplus in partnership with @UNFPARwanda and @UNAIDSRwanda , we kicked off a 3-day training for 28 journalists, social media influencers, and representatives of youth-led organizations,  on Gender Transformative Reporting & Broadcasting, Positive Masculinity, Youth Engagement, and SRHR-HIV Prevention.

The initiative aims to strengthen the capacity of media practitioners and youth actors to challenge harmful gender stereotypes, promote inclusive communication, and strengthen advocacy for sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and HIV prevention through gender-transformative approaches.

The afternoon sessions focused on deepening participants’ understanding of the difference between gender and sex as a foundation for gender-transformative learning. This created space for reflection on how these concepts play out in daily life, particularly in relation to household chores, childcare responsibilities, body autonomy and money, and power dynamics within relationships between men and women.
By examining these realities, participants were able to challenge personal perceptions around these issues.
