After what has been a poor breeding season in Thetford Forest, it was really good to prove success breeding of another pair of #longearedowl . This juvenile male was an incidental capture, ringed under licence, during our Nightjar project visit.
An amazingly early #Nightjar movement of an adult male that's already departed #thetfordforest and stopped off at Poole Harbour Typically, most adult Nightjars don't migrate until after the end of August. Potentially it was a failed breeder or moving out early due to the drought?
#Nightjar nesting has resumed now that warmer weather has arrived. The female had been present for almost 3 weeks, so possibly failed recently, or decided to delay nesting during the recent weeks of cold & wet conditions. Monitored for @_BTO & @ForestryEngland in #ThetfordForest
The Thetford Forest #nightjar season started well with many back on territory. Only 7 caught but 3 returning from 2023 including this male yeilding our first multi-sensor tag retrieval. Novel flight height data will help reveal the risks posed by wind turbines on migration.
