I recently received a call.
It was from a creator who literally told me:
“I want to improve my video editing to get more views on my channel.”
As soon as I heard this,
I felt something was off.
So, I decided to check his channel.
I looked at his last ten videos
and noticed the following:
1. the thumbnails or overall packaging was very poor,
as the thumbnails literally confirmed the titles
and looked very low-quality.
2. The duration of the videos was very short,
and my recommendation would obviously be to improve that, making them longer.
3. He didn’t know who he was making content for.
He was creating very mixed,
ambiguous content,
with no clear target audience.
4. His scripts were not optimized at all.
It was just someone talking to the camera,
but without any natural optimization.
This made me think about how many creators out there,
Especially those who are just starting,
Believe that editing is going to save their channel.
They think that by hiring a good editor,
Even if they produce bad content,
Have poor packaging,
And everything else,
They’ll get more views...
But that’s not how it works.
Video editing is the last thing you should add to your arsenal of video improvements.
Before hiring an editor,
Focus on learning what makes a video go viral,
How to improve your thumbnails,
How to improve your structure - Your scripts,
And your filmmaking.
Then, focus on implementing visual retention techniques that can guarantee you better chances of success on the platform.
Let’s stop normalizing the idea that we need a great editor to get views.
Instead
Let's learn how to create better content.
@MikeshakeYT Thank you Mike! This is something I struggle with personally. Trying to take the time to do all the heavy lifting in the front end of the video before I even press record
@vidIQ Think of the idea, ask myself if it would resonate with a targeted audience, then think of title thumbnail combinations that would pass the curiosity gap test. Then develop hooks
@PaddyG96 I recommend these too! “Made to Stick” by Chip and Dan Heath gets to why ideas stick because of simplicity and concreteness and Contagious by Jonah Berger talks about the elements of Viral ideas!
