Someone keeps sending Satoshi Bitcoin.
A Revolut user (or users) has sent Satoshi over $5,000 of Bitcoin in the past 2 days.
What message are they trying to send?
BitMEX is shutting down after 11+ years. I know this is another post about it on your feed today, but I need a moment, because a big part of crypto life just closed with it.
For those who joined crypto in the last few years - especially the Hyperliquid community - let me explain what a monster BitMEX was.
At peak bear market in 2018, BitMEX had over 90% of the entire crypto futures market. They invented the perps funding rate mechanism. The base +10.95% APR funding you see everywhere is a constant BitMEX set 10 years ago
My first perps trades there were in 2017. In 2019 I turned 0.1 BTC into 8 BTC on that exchange - the run I later broke down on @TradingJamPL (link to video in the comments, it's in Polish). That exchange taught me leverage, liquidations, and humility. Usually in that order.
And it was beautifully weird:
- No stablecoins. For most of its existence you literally could NOT exit to stable. If you wanted to be "flat" you opened a 1x short. That was the stablecoin.
- BTC deposits only, one chain, withdrawals once per day through multi-sig. They were never hacked.
- The ticker was XBT, not BTC.
- Trollbox. The Rekt bot. "Order Submission Error" at the exact moment you needed your order to go through.
Funny story: when Binance announced their perps in 2018, I happened to be talking with @cz_binance IRL in Singapore. I told him, please don't kill BitMEX, it's my favorite exchange😂. He replied that they don't want to kill anyone, just expand the market. He posted his own farewell today. Full circle.
And one thing people forget: in March 2020, during the Covid crash, Bitcoin was genuinely going to $0. There was less than $20M left in the bids on the biggest perps exchange in the world. Arthur pulled the plug and stopped the spiral. I watched it happen live, with my own eyes. That night Arthur Hayes saved Bitcoin.
Glad I got to meet @CryptoHayes IRL.
What's left after all these years: the memories, a BitMEX t-shirt, and a pair of BitMEX socks.
If they had ever done an airdrop, I'm pretty sure I'd be richer than @chameleon_jeff 😭
