Over the next 6 weeks, I'm going to study 2 hours of coaching materials every day and I'll document it ALL here.
84 hours of new learning.
Books, webinars, podcasts, I'll share everything and my thoughts🧵:
Inspired by @MaccaCoaching!
In this graphic, Pep refers to 3 Zones he encourages his players to focus on finding teammates to create more offensive situations. I would recommend showing this visual to your players consistently to help them build a picture in their head of what to look for.
In this video and his book 'Intensity', Pep Ljinders talks about players taking initiatives. A useful tool in simplifying the game for players and encouraging them to make passes more likely to lead to goals. Refer to below for a graphic I've designed.

Dick Bate understood ‘the power of 3’ - the simple use of rhythm, rhyme & repetition to create memorable phrases that helped tell the storyline of the game - a great example is his phrase for midfield positioning: “one stay - one go away - one come and play”
Highly recommend reading this article by Nick in shaping how we deliver sessions to our players. This is relevant to all ages, not just 9 years old Nick speaks about in his article.
New post coming Saturday!
In this collaboration with @Coach__Luca, we explore how player-friendly language can engage players not just in the moment, but across entire session blocks.

@nasthe3rd Nick, this is absolutely fantastic. I already do similar concepts with my own team already but I absolutely love the structure you have given to it. I’ll definitely be doing this with my own team. I’d love to see you do the same with other topics!
@Doug_Lemov The island where the story takes place contains a society that is a blend of western and eastern philosophy. Essentially it is about balance with accepting both good and bad. Compare that to Brave New World where both societies in the story are dystopian in nature.
@Doug_Lemov I would highly recommend Island. Probably my number 1 recommendation when people ask what book to read. He does use the characters as voices for his own ideas but very much made me re-examine how I look at the world. Probably the most accurate version of a utopia i have read.
@Coach__Luca I've done something similar with my U12s which was inspired by @PaulMcG8's Hunting Dogs themes. Mad dogs is the theme that I use with them to encourage intensity and pressing. I like to use the idea of them 'smelling blood' when they sense weakness and the time to 'pounce'
@MrJFinch@MaffCx@KnowledgeMatrs Hi Joe,
Could you please send me some samples as well? First year history teacher and would love to use activities like these to help build my students literacy skills
One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever had was ‘get in the room with top coaches - watch & listen’
I had the privilege of attending numerous coaching demonstrations by Don Howe & in the video below working with Mike Phelan to bring Don’s advice to life in a coaching session
Do you want to write for Jogo Funcional?
Over the next few months I’ll be open to collaborating with guest writers for co-written articles to help grow the blog

@coach_kevin_m I think a big part of it is technical instruction has completely disappeared in coach education. My C License did not cover it at all. I’ve had to find it in older books written by guys such as Tony Carr. Especially since I might be able to do the action but not know to teach it
@hbrooks_coach Love the priority list you’ve given, can encourage players to use that as a framework when scanning. I actually find it so frustrating when players ignore a forward pass to start again.
@CoachJulesAA Maybe to be more intentional with your pre-game team talks, you could have a list of actions you want to see in game (that are related to the talk) and identify whether you’ve had success or not.
@_ToddBeane Can you share why you think curriculums are so important? I’ve found myself leading towards a more context based approach recently e.g. shaping training around the players I have and the problems they are encountering.
