MTV2 launched 30 years ago today. The spinoff was conceived as an all-music-video counterpart to MTV, which had shifted toward broader entertainment programming. It was aimed at a slightly more mature audience (“perhaps 23 years old, instead of 21,” as MTV Networks’ president put it at the time).
M2 featured both new and old videos from a broader array of artists than MTV. It was also the first cable channel to offer a 24-hour interactive computer service, letting viewers access synchronized artist and song information on a PC if they had an Intercast tuner card. The inaugural VJs were ‘Rolling Stone’ writer Jancee Dunn, KPNT DJ Kris Kosach, and Matt Pinfield, who had already been hosting ‘120 Minutes.’
Known as M2 for its first few years and initially available only via satellite, the network kicked off with Beck’s “Where It’s At.” MTV2 is still around, but it largely stopped airing music videos about a decade ago.
