𝐈𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞. But I feel so privileged to have had the opportunity to stand up for my home area. To set a positive example for younger people. To try to do politics in a different way.

I feel proud of this county, and of my positive campaign, that focused on people here. Not Westminster.

I look back on 1,000 photos, one in each of the communities I visited, with a smile. Part political campaign, part documentary, part mobile counselling. It worked.

I met amazing people from every background, generation, walk of life. Many felt forgotten, frustrated, fed up - but they were so pleased to welcome me.

Looking back, I remain slightly stunned at how a crowd would patiently gather at the designated meeting points to await the arrival of a clapped-out Peugeot named Peggy. We’d meet outside the pub, village hall, phone box, or in the remotest places, ‘verge’. In rain, snow, wild winds.

It was British politics at its finest.

They turned up, because I turned up. Whatever the weather, however far flung the location. It wasn’t easy but it was a truly rewarding experience. I will remember it forever.

This photo is from the day before Polling Day, during Peggy’s final run. Driving across the Moors, with the sun shining, the landscape looking so glorious, and enthusiastic responses, I couldn’t have felt prouder.

Riding along in the direction of my 1,000th stop, I knew full well that defeat was a possibility, but that I couldn’t have done any more. I’d given it everything.

I’ve learnt so much from this campaign. About this county, its people, about politics, human nature - and me. I’ve lost, yes, but l’m coming out stronger, more determined than ever, ready for the next chapter, whatever that might be.

Thank you to everyone who voted for me, who supported me, who put trust in me. It means so much. It was support earned, not expected, stop by stop, handshake by handshake.

Election 2024 ended with one final handshake, as I congratulated Mayor @DSkaith in the count centre. It felt like a very fitting end. Politics as it should be. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐥𝐮𝐜𝐤, 𝐃𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐝.
