They preserved their secrets in plain sight, in books, art and fables. The clues lead to Germany, to wine merchants that helped the holy family hide while being transported across the country, and a wolf tribe (Arnolf, Rollo, Adolf names) that kept them protected. I suspect the wolf tribe were the original Rosicrucians (Rose=MM, Cross=Jesus), who later aligned with the church as Templars to escort the holy family.
I suspect they had 3 children (Arnolfinis maybe).

She would not stop talking. So they filled her mouth with gunpowder.

Anneken Hendriks was 53 years old, could neither read nor write, and had moved into a house in Amsterdam next door to the underbailiff of the city. She had left the Catholic church six years earlier and joined the Anabaptist Mennonites. She held meetings at her home. She had been baptised as an adult in the Anabaptist tradition. She had married her husband at night, in a private ceremony, in the manner of her faith rather than the church.

Her neighbour reported her to the authorities.

She was arrested and her formal sentence was recorded in full. The court listed her crimes. She had forsaken the holy church. She had adopted the cursed doctrine of the Mennonists. She had been baptised outside the Catholic faith.

And she had married her husband at night, away from the church, in a private ceremony.

That was in the sentence. That was listed as evidence against her.

On October 27th, 1571, two weeks before her execution, she was tortured by rack and strappado. The purpose was to extract the names of other Anabaptists in Amsterdam. She gave no names. She was tortured until there was nothing left to do but stop, and she had given them nothing.

On November 10th, 1571, she was taken from the city hall across Dam Square to the stake.

She passed her neighbour on the way. The man who had reported her. She stopped and looked at him and told him that God would punish him if he continued in his Judas act. The Martyrs Mirror, the Mennonite martyrology that recorded her story, preserved that moment in the account of her death.

She continued walking. Catholic confessors approached her and she turned them away. She was praying aloud, speaking to the crowd, addressing the people around her. She would not be silent and she would not be still.

They packed gunpowder into her mouth.

Then they tied her to a ladder and threw her into the flames.

A contemporary engraving made by the Dutch artist Jan Luyken in 1685, now held in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, depicts the execution on Dam Square. The old city hall stands in the background. A crowd watches from the square. In the centre, a woman is bound to a ladder above the fire.

Her name is recorded. Her story is recorded. The Martyrs Mirror made sure of it.

Anneken Hendriks was one of thousands of Anabaptists executed across the Netherlands and the German states during the sixteenth century under the authority of the Spanish Habsburg administration. The specific charge of heresy had been used against Anabaptists since 1525. By the time Anneken died in Amsterdam in 1571, the machinery was well established, the sentences were formulaic, and the executions were routine.

None of that made her routine.

She could not read. She had never written a word. She held meetings in her home and married her husband at night and refused under torture to give a single name, and when they walked her across Dam Square to burn her she used every step of it to speak.

They could only think of one way to stop her.

Appreciate you responding…and with such good information. I took it to mean a Sphinx would sit north west of both the Menhaure pyramid and its Temple, which to me, put it at Biondi’s spot. Looking at it in the context you’ve given, I agree it wouldn’t match… it would instead sit closer to the great Sphinx…if I’m not mistaken.

I must admit I’m a little disappointed, as part of me hopes there is a 2nd Sphinx. Still, happy to have clarity on Reisner’s thinking on it, so thank you for that. 🙏

Prof Reisner gave a very brief explanation for why they dumped the Mastaba debris there, starting 1909. I don’t have the exact wording to hand, but I got the impression the U.S., German and Italian concessions all agreed that this spot simply allowed them to not impede on each other’s paths.
Reisner wrote in his diary that a 2nd, much smaller Sphinx, most likely existed at this spot. Considering he oversaw Hassan’s work, and was the lead for decades, his opinion would be highly regarded.

Around 1000 AD, monks on the Silk Road sealed a hidden chamber in a cliff face.

Inside were 50,000 manuscripts. They disappeared from history.

The Mogao Caves at Dunhuang had been a centre of Buddhist learning for six centuries, where pilgrims and merchants crossing the Gobi left texts in Chinese, Tibetan, Sanskrit, Sogdian, and Hebrew. Among them was the Diamond Sutra, printed in 868 AD, the oldest dated printed book on Earth.

Nobody knows why the chamber was sealed. Perhaps an invading army was coming. Perhaps the monks knew their world was ending. They left no names and no explanation.

But the wall held. For 900 years, through conquest, abandonment, and the slow burial of the caves in sand, nobody found it.

Then, in 1900, a penniless caretaker noticed a crack behind a fresco and broke through into a room.

It was stacked floor to ceiling with the lost library of the Silk Road.

We still have no idea who the monks were. History does not always record its guardians.

Maybe. It’s a good theory.
I have my own if you’re interested. If we believe the old legends, that the grotto was once a great room, leading to two tunnels and two gates, then maybe we could look at it as the entry and exit route of early robbers.

I’m thinking they entered the grotto from the tunnels. Hacked at the lintel over the door in order to push aside the “out-of-place and oversized” stone that was blocking the entrance into the “well shaft”. Once that stone was set to one side, they widened the shaft walls as they ascended and triggered a few traps along the way. As was done in most of the mastabas, they plundered all the Tura limestone from the grotto, except for those that surrounded the door.

It’s hypothetical, but it’s where I’m currently landed. Happy to change my mind if I know it couldn’t have worked.

It was about confusion.
Scribes and Secret societies hid multiple messages in any one piece of art. The 800AD Book of Kells bible, has land contracts, curses, and coded messages all inside it.

Enlightenment happened…People asking “what’s this?”

A paintings of Jesus, a woman with wedding garter, 3 children, and a ship, being blessed by a bishop, has to be explained away….

“that’s just St. Nicholas who resurrected 3 children he found in a barrel… dreamt Mary and Jesus visited him in prison… and he loved sailing.”

That’s how a random, previously unmentioned St. Nic from 300AD, became Santa Claus.

All hidden messages were similarly explained away… otherwise said to be “symbolism”.

But with the internet, and digital art, we all have the “eyes” to see. We have the equivalent of their original unpainted giant books.

So they had to invent Cicada 3301. Now once again the original hidden messages can be explained away…”they’re just a modern puzzle.”
