The German national anthem was written in 1841, when Germany was still divided into dozens of independent states, long before German unification in 1871.

The geographical references to the Meuse, Memel, Adige and Belt reflected the broader German-speaking cultural and linguistic world as it was understood at the time, rather than the borders of a unified German state, which did not yet exist.

In other words, Germans already shared a common language, culture and national identity before they became a politically unified nation. We were, in a sense, a cultural nation long before we became a nation-state.

It's also worth noting that these geographical references appear in the first stanza, which is no longer part of Germany's official national anthem. Only the third stanza is used today.

Tankstellen ohne Kraftstoff: An mehreren Tankstellen im Rheinland kam es zu Lieferengpässen. In Siegburg war bei Aral der Premiumkraftstoff Ultimate ausverkauft, zeitweise fehlten auch Diesel und Super E10. Auch in Rommerskirchen meldeten Aral und TotalEnergies Engpässe. Verantwortlich sind das anhaltende Niedrigwasser des Rheins und eine hohe Nachfrage. Inzwischen wurden einige Bestände wieder aufgefüllt.

Der Rhein wird zum Transportproblem: Am 19. Oktober lag der Rheinpegel in Köln bei nur 54 Zentimetern, in Bonn bei 71 Zentimetern. Frachtschiffe können deshalb weniger Kraftstoff transportieren. Ersatzlieferungen per Lkw oder Bahn sind nur begrenzt möglich. Der Branchenverband en2x betont allerdings, dass die Versorgung insgesamt gesichert sei. Dauerhafte oder flächendeckende Engpässe werden derzeit nicht erwartet.

Wenn Deutschlands wichtigste Wasserstraße zum Nadelöhr wird, reichen wenige Zentimeter Wasserstand, um selbst die Kraftstoffversorgung regional unter Druck zu setzen!

So, apparently, all the petrol stations in southern Frankfurt am Main have run out of fuel. No petrol, no diesel, nothing. I was told they're hoping to get a delivery sometime this afternoon.

I’m increasingly getting the impression that the problem is a slight shortage of general knowledge. I keep noticing the Budapest Memorandum quietly vanishing from this debate, which is rather unfortunate, as it contains most of what one needs to understand the core problem we’re dealing with today. Hopefully, it will be featured prominently in their discussions.

Ich fände es sinnvoll, wenn Politiker mit sehr klaren Positionen zur Ukraine sich stärker ein eigenes Bild vom Alltag vor Ort machen würden – ähnlich wie Jens Stoltenberg 2013 als Taxifahrer in Norwegen als er Ministerpräsident war.

Ein paar Tage als Taxifahrer in der Ostukraine außerhalb offizieller Programme, könnte mehr vermitteln als ausschließlich organisierte Besuche. Sollten dabei nicht alle Politiker zurückkommen, ist das auch ein Feedback...
