@JoAnneGross1 Culturally responsive #SoR honors the language & ways with words students bring to learning endeavors. i.e.We can teach phonemic awareness using the language of students' lives & then help them bootstrap resultant understanding to new language encountered in school and beyond.
@ReadingShanahan@plthomasEdD@NateJoseph19@DoctorSam7@HelenProulx2 It's wise to state what we mean by SoR every time we reference it. This lessens the likelihood that meaning is lost in interpretation/translation. Any education jargon is subject to misinterpretation if we are not intentionally coherent in its use. P.S. SoR is more than phonics.
@ClaireConroy26 @DrMPaff@weedentracy Interestingly, Jo-Anne brings Mark Seidenberg into many conversations on Twitter. He's co-author of the paper you suggested (which is a great read). I wonder if she missed that. The point you make about structured literacy and cultural sensitivity is such an important one!
@JoAnneGross1 I suspect this is due to Reading First curricula that did not account for differences in dialect, discourse, or language. I agree that teaching phonics explicitly and systematically is essential. I also agree this can be done using students' dialects, discourses, and language.
