#OTD - 17 May 1927 Motherwell beat Real Madrid 3-1.

In 1927 the Royal Spanish Football Federation invited Motherwell, Swansea Town and Real Madrid to participate in a special edition of the Copa del Rey.

Motherwell beat Swansea 4-3 on 15 May thanks to goals by Willie MacFadyen (2), David Thackery & Andrew McMurtie.

In the Final in the Estadio Chamartin on 17 May Motherwell beat Real Madrid 3-1 with goals by David Hutchison, David Thackery & Bobby Ferrier.

They were presented with the Copa del Rey by King Alfonso XIII, who was born the same day MFC was formed, 17 May 1886.

It was an additional trophy to the real Copa del Rey competed for by Spanish clubs which was won by Real Union on 15 May.

The trophy won by Motherwell is now on display in the Centenary Suite at Fir Park.

The glass trophy was given to Real Madrid in 2023 when myself and Nick Mackie visited their archive library to carry out research into the tournament.
