ECOWAS BRINGS TOGETHER EXPERTS AND DECISION-MAKERS TO STRENGTHEN REGIONAL ECONOMIC INTEGRATION

As part of the Regional Economic Integration Weeks, the ECOWAS Commission, through its Department of Economic Affairs and Agriculture, is continuing to strengthen dialogue and cooperation with Member States. From 22 to 26 June, Dakar hosted a series of regional meetings bringing together experts, decision-makers, agricultural producers, livestock farmers and technical and financial partners to discuss issues relating to regional integration.

In the presence of the Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, Dr Kalilou Sylla, the official joint launch of three regional meetings marked this stage of the Dakar event: the regional consultation workshop for agricultural producers’ and livestock farmers’ organisations on food security stockpiling; the 11th General Assembly of the ECOWAS Community Metrology Committee; and the handover ceremony for equipment to the LACOMEV laboratory at the EISMV. Following the opening ceremony, each agency or directorate continued its technical work with its specific stakeholders and partners.

Prof. Hadiza Nuhu, an associate professor of pharmacy at Ahmadu Bello University, has developed Herb 25, an anti-malaria herbal drug registered by NAFDAC.

The drug, developed after 12 years of research, is described as an enhanced ethnomedical preparation from herbs traditionally used in Nigeria to treat malaria.

Herb 25 is formulated for chloroquine-resistant malaria and is dispensed in tea bags for easy preparation with hot water. University officials said it is the first anti-malaria drug of its kind to be produced by a Nigerian university.

Nuhu, a senior lecturer in the Department of Pharmacognosy and Drug Development, holds a Ph.D. from ABU. She is also a member of the Nigerian Society of Pharmacognosy and research director of the Association of Commonwealth Traditional Medicine Practitioners, West Africa.
