One of the interviewees on Radio National this morning repeated the claim that we need tough borders because ‘otherwise we end up with boats sinking and people drowning’. I am not sure why this claim is never contested.

The reason refugees came to Australia in unseaworthy boats is that Australia has a policy of impounding any boats that bring refugees to our shores – so people who own seaworthy boats were not prepared to have them used for that purpose.
