Happy Mother’s Day, Virginia!
I hope every mother, grandmother, and mother figure across the Commonwealth enjoys a very special day filled with joy and love.
NYT: A Private Call Reveals Democrats’ Desperation Over Tossing of Map
Democrats are struggling to respond to a major redistricting setback in Virginia, with some party leaders discussing an audacious and possibly far-fetched idea for trying to restore a congressional map voided by the court but showing little indication they have a clear plan.

NYT: Any plans to enact a new congressional map in Virginia for this year’s midterm elections would require action in the next few days.
In a court filing last month, Steven Koski, the commissioner of the Virginia Department of Elections, said any changes to the maps after Tuesday, May 12, “will significantly increase the risk” of his agency being unable to properly prepare for the state’s scheduled Aug. 4 primary election.
There has to be a point where state-level Democrats, who just won big in November, tell national Democrats that they need to get their own shit together.
My mother, Dr. Shyamala Gopalan Harris, came to this country at 19 years old to pursue an education and a life of purpose. Everything my sister and I became began with the love she raised us with and the sacrifices she made.
Today, I am thinking of her and wishing a happy Mother's Day to all of the mothers, stepmoms, grandmothers, godmothers, and aunties who shape, inspire, and love us.
There isn’t a moment that goes by that my mom’s words and example aren’t guiding me. I will always carry the values that she gave me, which I’ve done my best to pass on to my daughters, too.
Happy Mother’s Day. ❤️
Per The New York Times, there are discussions among congressional Democrats about still trying to implement a new congressional map in Virginia despite the Supreme Court of Virginia’s ruling.
That process could include lowering the retirement age of Supreme Court justices and trying to invalidate the constitutional amendment that created Virginia’s bipartisan redistricting commission.

I joined the Police Unity Tour as they celebrated 30 years of riding from Richmond to the National Mall to honor law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.
Thank you for carrying this mission forward and making sure the sacrifices of those who wear the badge are not forgotten.
Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell tells me that the rumors yesterday that Democrats are considering drastic measures to implement new maps are not going anywhere. They would not have time under the current system used at the Dept. of Elections to make the changes, he says. He also says forcing the retirement of Supreme Court justices would be extreme and he wants to work within the current legal system to do these kind of things.
Virginia is the first state in the South to create a paid family and medical leave program!
At the end of the day, Virginia’s greatest economic asset — and we have many — is our people: the workforce that powers growth across our commonwealth. The businesses that thrive here have always known that. What they needed were willing partners in state government who knew it, too.
This law is that partnership in action.
Paid family and medical leave will make Virginia a stronger place to build a career, grow a family and start a business.

In 1966, Barry Goldwater told William F. Buckley Jr. that his greatest fear as a conservative was a president who would use the powers of the office to destroy everyone who disagreed with him.
