Aside having great footballers, Cabo Verde has been ranked as the most welcoming country in Africa for the LGBTQIA+ community, according to the Equaldex Index, which measures LGBTQIA+ rights, laws, and public attitudes around the world. Homosexuality has been legal since 2004, and discrimination in employment based on sexual orientation has been banned since 2008.
While many African countries still criminalize same-sex relationships, São Vicente is home to Cabo Verde's largest LGBTQIA+ community.
