The template was rudimentary. I call it "zheti!" It revolved around forming shelf companies & using political connections to rig gvt tenders in one's favour using political connections.
The same political connections guaranteed preferential treatment in getting paid & immunity from prosecution.
The immunity from prosecution then acted as a facade & allowed him to masquerade as a legitimate businessman when he wasn't.
Extensive ties to the criminal underworld "lubricated" the patronage networks & incentivised the political actors he was involved with to turn a blind eye to his criminal past likely in exchange for "war chests" to be used to rig democratic processes to retain power unlawfully.
That has to be the nub of it! A scandal of epic proportions staying tantalisingly just out of reach owing to the immense power of those involved & their capacity to unleash harm on anyone that seeks to peel the onions!
I had lived in my new house for exactly three days when someone rang my doorbell. I opened it expecting a welcome basket. Instead, two police officers were standing there.
One officer asked, “We’ve had a complaint that you’ve been making loud construction noise all evening.”
I laughed because the only tool I’d used all day was a screwdriver to hang one family photo.
The officers looked around and quickly realized there wasn’t a single power tool in sight. One of them even chuckled.
Just then, my next-door neighbor walked outside looking annoyed. She pointed at my house and said, “That’s the one!”……
True life story.
Many years ago, during my elder brother’s introduction, everything was going well until the lady’s father asked about our church denomination. My father answered, and the atmosphere changed immediately.
The lady’s father gave one condition for the marriage to happen, my brother must convert to his denomination cos he’s a knight.
My father refused but left the final decision to my brother. My brother declined. After a few back n forth, we stood up and left. My brother was visibly hurt and dejected.
The next day, my brother reached out his fiancée and during their conversation, she said she was willing to proceed without her father’s consent. My brother pleaded with her not to do that and advised her to try convincing her father instead.
She went back to her father and somehow the conversation got heated; Her father refused again.
Right there, she told him, “as long as you’re alive, I will never get married.”
A few months later she relocated to New Jersey.
It’s been about 15 years now. She’s in her mid-40s, still single, and has never returned to Nigeria…and Yes, her papa still dey alive.
