Here's the counter:

Japan didn't preserve those things. It got stuck with them — and is paying for it.

The quiet streets and handmade meals are real. The romanticization of why they exist is not.

The fax machine isn't charming — it's a symptom:

Japan's continued reliance on fax, paper, and analog bureaucracy isn't cultural resistance to soulless modernity. It's institutional calcification. During COVID, Japan's inability to digitize contact tracing, vaccine rollout, and benefit distribution cost lives and months. The government created a Digital Agency in 2021 specifically because the fax-and-hanko system had become a national emergency. The old couple's small shop exists partly because zoning laws, inheritance tax structures, and retail regulations make modernization prohibitively difficult — not because Japan philosophically chose craft over scale.

The loneliness Japan "avoided" is actually worse there:

Japan has a Minister of Loneliness (created 2021). It has a documented phenomenon — hikikomori — of over one million people who have withdrawn entirely from social life, sometimes for decades. It has one of the highest elderly suicide rates in the developed world, and a culture of karoshi (death by overwork) so common it has its own word. The "stranger who's kind for no reason" exists alongside a social structure so rigid that deviation from its norms results in quiet, total exclusion.

The tourists are buying a performance:

The Japan visitors experience is a specific, curated geography — Kyoto alleys, Tokyo kissaten, rural ryokan. It's also an export product. The "kindness" tourists encounter is omotenashi, a formalized service ethic, not spontaneous warmth. Most tourists don't see the salary workers drinking alone at 11 PM because going home means admitting they left before their boss. They don't see the unmarried women over 30 navigating a labor market that still considers them a liability. They see the set, not the backstage.

"Refusing to trade away what makes a life" is easier when you have no choice:

Japan's birth rate is 1.2. Its population is shrinking by hundreds of thousands per year. Young Japanese are leaving rural areas precisely because the quiet, small, handmade economy cannot support a life they want to live. The small shops closing aren't being replaced by artisanal alternatives — they're just closing. What looks like preservation from the outside often looks like stagnation from the inside.

The original statement mistakes the residue of a society that hasn't fully modernized for a deliberate philosophy about what matters. Some of what tourists feel in Japan is genuinely worth examining. But a country isn't wise because it's picturesque to visit. And the things that make it feel different from the outside are often the same things making it harder to live in from the inside.
