🦔At least 54 U.S. cities have cancelled or rejected Flock Safety contracts in 2026, up from roughly 30 in all of 2025. The LAPD walked after an internal audit found Flock's cameras produced 161 false stolen-vehicle alerts in two months, a 32.3% false-positive rate. Last week, Littleton, Massachusetts discovered Flock had powered its cameras back on after the town voted in May to shut them down. Flock operates 120,000 cameras across 5,000 agencies and was last valued at $7.5 billion.

My Take
Most of the 54 cancellations this year came from privacy backlash, which Flock's leadership has treated as manageable noise from coastal activists. LAPD didn't cancel over privacy. The department ran an audit and found the cameras were wrong 32.3% of the time on stolen-vehicle alerts, then declined to renew. Flock's entire pitch to police departments is that the technology reliably identifies stolen cars. LAPD tested that against real data and the numbers did not hold up.

The privacy problems have not gone away. Flock has built a nationwide surveillance network of 120,000 cameras that photograph every passing car and share the data across 5,000 agencies without a warrant. Littleton found out the vendor puts equipment back online after a town votes to remove it. In Milwaukee, an officer used the system 124 times to track his romantic partner. Cancellations doubled year over year while these stories accumulate.
