Mental health crises need the right response.

Tempe PD’s Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training helps officers recognize mental health crises, de-escalate situations and connect people with behavioral health resources instead of the criminal justice system when appropriate.

[Chief Kenneth McCoy @ChiefKenMcCoy]

Proud of our @TempePolice officers and their continued commitment to Crisis Intervention Training (CIT). This training helps our officers respond to individuals experiencing a crisis with compassion, understanding, and the skills needed to de-escalate challenging situations. It’s an important investment in our officers and the community we serve. 💙

Today, the Tempe Police Department pauses to honor the lives forever changed by September 11, 2001.

We remember the thousands of innocent lives lost that day and the families who were left with an unimaginable loss.

A man accused of breaking into Grace Community Church and causing approximately $10,000 in damage has been arrested following an investigation that relied on video evidence and detailed analysis by Tempe Police.

Great work by all teams involved!

This is an inflammatory claim made by a defendant and an attorney who are trying to avoid justice. The full videos show that none of it is true, and the TOA stands by our officers to the fullest extent possible.

Following today's media interviews by Eryn Bonner and her attorney, the Tempe Officers Association has released the following statement:

This entire encounter was captured on body camera and surveillance footage.

and lashing out at a uniformed police officer, punching him in the head.

The videos do not show a Tempe police officer "groping" anyone, especially amid the struggle created by Miss Bonner's failure to back away and her refusal to calm down.

"A recent video from an incident in Tempe has raised concerns in our community, and I take those concerns seriously. Before jumping to conclusions, I ask the public to consider the full context of this incident.

What is not evident in some of the videos — and what could not have been known to responding officers — is that the woman and another individual who was with her were initially attempting to stop a fight. When officers arrived, they observed two men who were struggling with each other. The situation was active, chaotic, and did not allow for a slow, considered review of events — the type of review my office had the benefit of conducting.

After that review, we determined that there was not a reasonable likelihood of conviction for the felony charges. Let me explain what that means, and, perhaps more importantly, what it does not mean. Whether there is a "reasonable likelihood of conviction" is a prosecutorial determination of whether a jury will unanimously find someone guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. What it is not is a finding that an officer’s actions were wrong or violated policy, nor is it a finding that the accused was in the right or in the wrong.

In this case, after my senior staff and I reviewed the totality of the evidence, we did not believe a jury would convict, beyond a reasonable doubt, on felony charges, which is what my office prosecutes. It is the responsibility of the city prosecutor to determine if any misdemeanor charges are warranted." - County Attorney @Rachel1Mitchell

Tempe officers deserve leaders willing to follow the evidence, not predetermined narratives that fit an anti-law enforcement agenda. 4/4

It’s irresponsible that two newly elected members of Tempe City Council - only days into their terms - have decided to play politics in the middle of TPD’s ongoing investigation into the July 19 Mill Avenue incident.

despite body-worn camera footage showing repeated commands, restraint, escalating resistance, and an officer being assaulted.

The facts matter. The video matters. Due process matters.

Our statement regarding video of Mill Ave Incident:

[Merriam-Webster @MerriamWebster]

Why is it ‘cancelled’ in the U.K. but ‘canceled’ in the U.S.?

Because we gave them that L in 1776.

.@JakeHoffmanAZ says he supports cops and backs the blue... garbage.

[Arizona Police Association @AZPoliceAssc]

HCR2040 has to be repealed because the @JakeHoffmanAZ amendment added by him in his committee directly threatens the wellbeing of police officers across the state.  For somebody who says he supports public safety this feels like an ‘unbelievable betrayal.’
