I feel so bad for the Marathonbros because there's just no possible hope for this game.
Normies hate it because it became part of the Concordian prophecy, and D2 players hate it because it stole resources from their favorite game.
It failed to capture a wider audience because Sunsetting gave Bungie the reputation of toxic nuclear waste, and it failed to capture a larger niche audience because it wasn't hardcore enough for the typical extraction shooter crowd.
Various mishandlings also made the early hardcore meta awful to play, and level-based matchmaking put streamers against stream snipers and cheaters constantly. Both of these misfortunes contributed significant damage to its social media presence and reputation as a "bad game."
All of this sucks because Marathon is objectively a well produced game: Its style is amazing (if polarizing), it's not overly monetized or anti-player, and its bones are very solid. The potential for greatness in this game is most certainly not nonexistent.
Marathon deserved better, yet I do not envy the team trying to turn this mishap into a miracle.
