Anioma Traditional Rulers Offer Unwavering Support for State Creation
By Eze Onwenna
Traditional rulers from across Anioma have thrown their weight behind the state creation effort, pledging to mobilize their subjects during the referendum. The landmark gathering, convened by the Technical Committee (TC) on Anioma State Creation, took place at the Palace of the Obuzor of Ibusa, Delta State, on Monday, January 12, 2026.
The event marked a significant milestone in the quest for Anioma State, with traditional rulers from the nine local government areas of Anioma in attendance. Notable attendees included the Obi of Idumuje Unor, Ugoani of Okpanam, and Igwe of Amai, who expressed their support for the state creation effort. Prominent figures like Professor Leroy Edozien, Engr Sir Eboh, who represented Senator Ned Nwoko and Chief Dr. Kingsley Ojie, President of Izu Anioma, among others were also present.
In a unanimous resolution, the royal fathers reaffirmed Anioma's position as the sixth state within the Igbo bloc, citing the constitutional position of Ohaneze Ndigbo. They commended Senator Ned Nwoko for his tireless efforts and assured him of their unwavering support, pledging to mobilize their subjects during the referendum.
One of the speakers, in a show of solidarity, angrily frowned at politicians opposed to Anioma state, questioning whether being in the South-South region meant they had become Urhobos. This sentiment echoed the frustration and determination of the Anioma people, who are eager to achieve statehood.
The Technical Committee Chairman, HRM Obi Prof. Louis Nwaoboshi, received an oath of office, officially ushering him into leadership of the Technical Committee. The gathering also received an update on the Anioma State Creation Bill, which has passed the First and Second Readings and is awaiting the Third Reading and Plebiscite.
The traditional rulers' support marks a significant turning point in the Anioma state creation effort, and their mobilization efforts are expected to play a crucial role in the upcoming referendum.
