@sydfinkelstein talks of how Chez Panisse was clear about its role in supporting staff in personal issues - we did SO MUCH of this at Heist - but I wonder if we could have codified this? Could the safety net we had created have made people feel even safer?
In case interesting. As part of book research am interviewing Jess Butcher MBE about how vision and ambition fit into entrepreneurial life and what Act 1 of your startup career does to inform Act 2,3,4 etc. 12:30 today if interested + would LOVE questions from floor
Interesting quote from Chase Coleman on Julian Robertson “he was good at making people feel that sense of ownership and opportunity…and then providing a path, sort of steep learning curve for people who excelled at their first task.”
2/2 The argument goes that you really know you’ve cracked it as a boss when old employees contact you to tell you their news. Oddly - reflecting on where this has happened to me - it is a handful only and often the people I least expected to have a bond with me.
1/2 Read a curious thing today which asked whether I keep up with my former employees (often but not always is the answer) and go out of my way to find out what they are up to and celebrate it (not systematically I'm afraid).
I'm discussing “#FounderFaculty Ep1 w/ Dan Murray (CEO @Heights)” with @danmurrayserter. Today, 1 Feb at 16:30 GMT on @joinclubhouse. Join us! https://t.co/Gx0MENYNVR
1/2 Always remember the Bain HRPD process from 2005-9. Am sure it isn’t unique but is insanely effective. Utter clarity of expected performance against 10-15 categories (for example, “displays understanding of business context”) by seniority level (in 6 month bands). #startups
2/2 Everyone knew how to deliver on expectations, the ambitious knew how to exceed, the less capable knew where they needed to improve and HOW. #startups
How should we think about our “obligation” to help other founders? Is there one? I ALMOST ALWAYS take any call / meeting if I feel I can be helpful. Curious to know how other people react? How caring is our community? #startups
Thinking through the co-founder conundrum and skimming over @naomwass I keep questioning: What is the most efficient structure for a business? Why have equality at the top in a startup (vas demand co-founders) but not in public markets (co-CEOs are just odd)??
